forum safety rule - question

Yes , I was thinking about all the DIYgene china SMPS's and 300V-KV B+
supplies we tinker with around here.

Would they be considered more dangerous than a series connected 120V Xmas
led string ?

10 years ago , most was nicely isolated by a real trafo - NOT anymore.

yeah cheap battery chargers are notorious for this. I just started playing around with a 18650 battery charger, (same type of battery used in laptops and the Tesla Motors car) I noticed they don't supply the AC wall thingy anymore. works fine from DC tho.

yer a funny bird marce, last week you champion using 'offline' SMPS and then today you damn them in another thread. 😉IMO some DIYers are qualified to build "extreme" things and others are clearly not, that's why they have a report button, it lets an 'expert' make the call. But I agree some beginners have no sense building >300W stuff. It takes a few years experience.
I hope the experts will go quiet when a noob says a built this huge-n- dangerous thing and it doesn't work now! but global censorship of images in the PS forum would be bad thing too.

You should have read the views on JC Blowtorch thread on SMPSs.

The reason why I picked up on this one is because there is 380VDC with no transformer isolation, bridges can go short....

I try to avoid switching power supplies for audio, if possible. Too leaky!

that's my view too, although I would replace "audio" with Hi-Fi and "leaky" with too much doo doo
although I don't rule them out they have their places, but Ive designed and used them so I know what to look out for, and ways to fix / filter them. there are many ways to find a power solution, and a SMPS isn't the 1st thing I reach for in Hi-Fi.

You have picked one comment by JC (and a bit obscure at that) out of all the positive comments, and JCs comments are to be taken with a BIG spoon of Audiophile Reality Check.....
You ought to work as a marketing assistant for politicians....🙂

I don't think there are real problems with using smps, but a lot of immaginary ones. Latest AP uses smps afaik because with linear supply they could not get rid of 50/60 Hz totally.

Degradation ? Exactly the contrary.
Lazy cat had tried, and chosen an SMPS for its VSSA and First one amps...because it was sounding better.
(He seems to prefer non regulated ones.)
And those amps are CFAs, reputed for their reduced PSRR.

And this was my opinion since years too.

There is some discussion on noise fed back into the mains, there are regulations against this and designs should be done to cater for these regulations, though noise on power lines is a BIG joke these days, we happily add noise to the mains when Power Line Communications are used. The EMC club over here had a campaign to ban them.... Do you know that PWC systems have an EMC exemption, because they work by adding EMC to the power lines.
Power to a system is critical whatever topology you choose, both have good and bad implentations.🙂
