Flat Earthers

Well I moved a mountain today. Progress was made.

He was taking the 8"/mile squared to literally. What I mean is he wasn't taking height into consideration. For example a lighthouse was visible from 20 miles out, he was just subtracting the lighthouse height from the end number of 266' obscured. Since the height of the lighthouse is 182' the obscured height is really only 7' 20 miles out. Then there is refraction. Anyway I got him thinking and so he messaged one of the alpha flat earth members and he had a meltdown about it. My buddy said he is starting to believe me after a lot of math and illustrations.

End of the joy for you 😉

I stumbled across this TED Talks last night that deep dove into the world of astroturfing:

According to Sharyl Attkisson we're awash in contracted and intentional misrepresentations benefiting special interests. Political and commercial interests flood the Internet with targeted propaganda. Even Wikipedia, for example, for a fee apparently allows articles to be directly controlled by the subject, essentially turning them into online advertisements. It seems plausible at some level people - nurtured from birth by the 15 minutes of dissembling and obscurantism per TV broadcast hour - are suspending trust in mainstream messaging, opening up opportunities for other 'certainties'.
Flat earthers may be a consequence of the tragedy of the commons afflicting honesty in society....
The prediction is so true. It has gone a notch higher 'Great wall of culture': China is making its own version of Wikipedia | WIRED UK
regards.

School lessons, airplane flights, pictures from space.....just how do these people get convinced that the earth is flat ?.

Twitch.tv, Earthcam, Facebook Live and doubtless scores of other real time Internet resources provide constant evidence for the smooth transition of day and night across our 'so-called' globe. The conspiracy must go deep. Very, very deep. 😉

acceleration =9.8m/s

365 days/year
24 hrs/day
60 minutes/hour
60 sec/min

V=1/2AT^2
V= 1/2 * 9.8 * (365*24*60*60)^2 = 4.873e15

speed of light in vacuum is 3e8 M/s

4.873e15/3e8 =16million times the speed of light in one year.

And they haven't figured out if the flat earth theory will violate the speed of light?

  • School lessons: They might not agree with what your parents teach you.
  • Airplane flights: Only show how flat the Earth looks. Hardly proof.
  • Pictures from space: Ever watched a sci-fi movie? Plenty of beautiful pictures of planets that don't exist.
No good arguments there for a skeptic.

Richard C Hoagland the proprietor of this site is described as a conspiracy theorist and fringe pseudoscientist by by others and as "a unique mixture of amateur scientist, genius inventor, scam artist, and performer, blending true, legitimate speculative science with his own extrapolations, tall tales, and inflations." by the publisher of his books.

Mr Hoagland received the Ig Nobel Prize for Astronomy in 1997 for 'identifying artificial structures on Moon and Mars including a face on Mars and ten-mile high buildings on the other side of the moon'.
The presentation of these traditionally ends with the sentence "If you didn't win a prize but especially if you did: Better luck next year!".
