From this week's new scientist:
"FLAT Earth adherents have offered a prize of $8250 to anyone who can prove the world is round before their forthcoming congress ends. David Garret accepted the challenge, and outlines his methodology thus: “I’ll need a garden chair, some rope, 10 high-altitude weather balloons, a lot of helium and one volunteer from the Flat Earthers’ meeting.” After all, they do say that seeing is believing."
I bet no single volunteer will show up.
That is planet Neptune! Sorry🙂http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hipparchus

How do flat earthers explain the mathematical discovery of planet Poseidon?

What's the chair for?😉
Hahaha I like that.
Last night we got nowhere with him, one step forward two steps back. Turns out he is a VERY Religious, and we can't talk about that here but I am sure you can figure out what book he is getting his ideas from.
Science is evil and taking my soul is what I was told. I am done, no more trying to reason with him, I give up. Feel free to continue the scientific conversations I do enjoy that.

I get many of my ideas from what is probably the same book, and my reading of that book puts me at what many would regard as the conservative end of the book spectrum. However, I don't recall seeing anything in it which would lead me to flatism. I suspect he is just anti-science, based on ignorance of science and fear of science, and merely uses the book as a crutch to support his views - which he would probably still hold if he read a different book or no book at all.
Flatism is not a religious position, which is why we can discuss it here.

You nailed it. I grew up with the same book and don't recall the quotes either. I will PM you if he can cite them for me.
He says radar is proof that earth is flat. He can't seem to explain why. I will get some more quotes for you guys. It's hilarious.
I don't think flatism is a religion, but some people can use religious texts or beliefs to sustain his thoughts. But it's only a biased interpretation of religion.
A recent census had a lot of people list Jedi as their religion....
I decided to look it up... Worryingly, the definition includes:
1.2 [count noun] A pursuit or interest followed with great devotion.
‘consumerism is the new religion’
Hmm... That makes diy audio a religion, potentially! Aaargh!

That is also what I see. Could be the lens, but it looked the same to my eye with a straight edge
I'll by flying over the gulf twice next week. More pix and will also try to test lens distortion.
If you take a series of pictures with the camera aimed at different elevations with the center both above and below by say 10 degree increments, would that give sufficient information to evaluate the lense distortion?
The image looked curved curved to me without the ruler, but I used it for confirmation.
I suppose watching a live stream video from the ISS 240 miles (average) above the big spherical object we live on would be pointless?

Look at all the distortion below the lower left solar panel. obviously that is where the strings attach.
Pretty sweet video.

This guy is up in arms with NASA. Absolutely hates them and thinks they are a satanic cult lol.
The woman astronaut that will set the US record and be in space for 666 days has him convinced this is more than a sheer coincidence.
None of the ISS footage or any pictures you can come up with will convince him, he says they are all fake CGI movies.
At this point I have moved from trying to help or convince him to just feeding into his delusions. I am 'trolling' him if you will. I know I am terrible but I got to have some fun with it. I love listening to all the explanations of how radar and radio transmission works. I may even try and get him to join the conversation here but I don't want to upset him that we or I have been talking behind his back in a somewhat negative manner. I mean he knows I have been giving him a hard time over this regardless but I think it would be best if he joined in so you could hear it straight from his mouth. It is very entertaining.

Reminds me of the seal of Hezekiah archaeologists found near the City of David area of Jerusalem a few years ago. Had a winged sun disc and two ankhs. No YHWH, or any "Jah" word at all. At websites for believers most of them gushed that this proved the book correct. Some going so far as to say the winged sun disc is the symbol of YHWH. A few that were at least honest enough with themselves to recognize that "pagan" symbols did seem a bit strange went on to argue that since we KNOW how devoted Hezekiah was to God means the seal must be fake...
Earlier it was running forwards, now it is running backwards. Who is messing with the tape?
Aliens obviously🙂

They call it a "live feed" on that youtube link. If they were showing a movie would that constitute a live feed?
