M2 is really great
I only wanted to say, that the M2, I have been owning for half a year, is the best,that I ever listened to. These weren´t only 2 or so. I love this amp. Get one till it is gone. 🙂

In my mind I changed FQA into IRF and got high level of vocal and big bass. I don't know why ?
Different devices? The P channel IRF has the transconductance shelf in the
midrange, giving a distinct 2nd harmonic and some bass emphasis. Also
different transconductance and temp coefficients.

Sorry for resurrecting an old thread. I have been using a DIY A30
for over 10 years and last week was able to try an M2 in its place.
Admittedly I've only had a quick listen, but the M2 seemed a bit
more lively and the A30 a smidgen darker in comparison. The A30
was built using IRFP044s so perhaps that had something to do with
it. (Or maybe it was the cheap wine talking. 🙂 )
Just curious if anyone has observed something similar.

I would suppose that the reasons are
- the different input stages ( IRF9610 sound mostly darker)
- the sound of the xformer Nelson uses as auto former gives a clarity to the sound that is unique
- the M2 is k3 dominant and the Alephs mostly k2 dominant

make JFet front end and compare
or , at least , cascode input mosfets
or make cascoded JFet front end with proper buffer stage feeding OS

I've been thinking about the Aleph-J. Perhaps
I should look into converting my A30's front end

It depends on the sound that you prefer.
I've got both the Aleph 4 and the F5 and they definitely are very different in character. The Aleph, and I have been lead to believe - the BA series, have a more tubey sound to them which I like and prefer.

mini-a that needs some work.

I personally like the inputstage with the 9610 very much and when I converted my lousy Aleph with j-FETs I could not really say what was better.
