I agree with most of the other responses: build a kit from an established designer. It's fun. You will learn a lot. You will get a pair of speakers which work well and sound good, and you wont have to spend years experimenting and studying to get there.
If you discover that you really enjoy building speakers, you can start the learning process and work toward eventually designing your own... but at least you will have a good pair to listen to while you learn and experiment.
If you are looking for a nice sounding inexpensive amp to drive speakers, this one is pretty good for the money.

Or a pre planned 2 or 3 way passive speaker that's been planned out for you and already tried and tested, like an Overnight sensation, or other kit.
An active setup eliminates the need of building a crossover. To me that's easier than planning and executing a passive crossover that works and sounds good.

The result is a speaker you can live with and enjoy. I enclose the Curt Campbell mid and the Troels Gravesen mid, and the usual graph of how it works.
