It is a classic, why fool around?
Just use originals, plenty of fakes in the market

I just went ahead and built the supply I needed with a 7805.

IMO a nice cheap tweak is to enhance high frequency PSRR with a simple LC filter, like a ferrite bead plus cap, at the input of your regulator.
