ive ben reading alott crap on the fourm lately about comercial projectors,im glad ppl have made the step to comercial units but to come in here and bash what we are accomplishing is just SAD if you failed in their quest to obtain a quality diy projector it is your own fault not the theory of diy
so take your dlp/crt and build a diy projector from it then your posts will be worthy of this fourm THIS IS A DIY FOURM!!!!
some ppl just forget where they are sometimes
but anyways i have accomplished the construction of a 17.3" widescreen TRUE 24bit color 1600X1024 projector and i must say it tops all the projectors i built so far at 100" the screen door is nonexisent at 3' from the screen WOW
and the diy-labs triplet projects the whole 17.3" and then some i bet it will work on a 20" lcd wich i will find out in the future i may do another group buy for large fresnels so if your interested start saving your pennys
im sorry if that coment seems rude but i just couldnt take all the diy-bashing goin on from ppl that just gave up or better yet didnt even try cause an lcd pannel on a ohp is not diy at all

Hay Cruser: Your Right on the Mark Here...
DIY= Do It Yourself!! Nothing more...
Just My 2 cents..
"TRUE 24bit color 1600X1024 projector" Great!!!!!!!
MovLab 🙂
A local university (two hours away from here) was selling a SGI 320 system with that particular monitor. Both for $75 and in good condition. I ended up going up there only to find out someone bought it 1 hour before I got there. Awesome huh?
damn thats nice!!
is that pic with the original backlight or is it sitting on OHP?
Is it easy to strip that LCD? I have been wanting that LCD but that Multilink adapter is so expensive.

Cruser,
You said its finished? How would you compare the picture quality to a regular xga projectors you build but not the benq 557s anything else.
Btw, congrats on building the first diy uxga widescreen projector that we know of. We should all be shooting for this. I personally would spend 1000 bucks to build a uxga projector that would cost tens of thousands in the commercial form.
When can we seen screenshots?

That is IT! that is what we all aim for!
But is there no way I can use that monitor on a ordinary Nvidia card?!? I MUST use a SGI system??
It seems to me that 400 euro is a very good price but if I must use another graphic board or another system then it is not such a good deal.
Of course it is great if you go all the way! The only alternative for that res. is to strip a inspiron notebook!

vimax - why not just buy yourself an SGI system. There are load available on ebay for very little money. Right now there is a 16 processor system the size of a wardrobe for only £600!!!!! Ignore the processor speed. The newest SGI processor they build today is only 800mhz but is v. powerful. I have an SGI O2 and when people see it running they are suprised that it only has a 180mhz processor.
Cruser,
How good is the focus at the outside of the image with the DIYlabs triplet with the 17 inch wide screen LCD. Are there any appearent field of view problems.

hey vimax
you can use just about any video card you want with this lcd im running a gforce fx videocard with mine
there are 3 devices you can use to hookup to any video card
1) sgi multilink
2) gfx1600 adapter
3) and a special adapter i seen on ebay i dont remember the name of it off hand it converts the lvds cable on the lcd to dvi conector
3) and a special adapter i seen on ebay i dont remember the name of it off hand it converts the lvds cable on the lcd to dvi conector
So if I was to get this adapter and plug one end into an lvds raw screen(no controller) and the other end into my dvi output of my video card will it work? Or would I still need a lvds controller chip of somekind?
Beautiful work cruser,
Keep us posted on your progress. I think the 17 inch wide screen LCD will be the most viable size in the future for DIY projectors because smaller wide screen LCD's are really too small to serve the crossover function of a computer monitor and a desktop TV so they will always be expensive specialty items.
Except for the 7 inch wide screens that are made for mobile applications and have lower resolutions the other sizes are probably not manufactured in large quantities.
