Fertin vs. Supravox
Anybody compare the new Fertin surroundless drivers to the Supravox 215-2000 field coil?
I am enjoying the latter on simple JE Labs OBs augmented with TBI subs and am now thinking (after 2 months) it is my best sound ever.

Hi guys,
I wanted to let you know that the Fertin Acoustic company has been acquired by a new team of 4 persons including jean-Marie Semblat himself, the designer of the surroundless Model 7 drivers.
The company is about to start production of those gorgeous drivers, if any information required please go to the website www.fertin-acoustic.com and you will be soon forwarded to the new website still in construction.
Cheers,
Facelvega

I know this is a old post but maybe you guys are interested in something I am making.
On the moment I am two years working on a full surroundless, spiderless driver.
I really mean surroundless and nothing in place of it that can resonate (like the fertin these speakers must have resonate issues with the carbon rods etc..). The same story with the spider (there is no spider or something that looks like a spider). A few days ago I tested the first driver with all the aspects of it (it is the 4th generation). And what you guys say about the fertin driver it is just the observation I made of my driver. But I think with even less distortion (super clean sound). It is a 8" driver but not fullrange, goes up till 3-5Khz. I am planning to commercialize it but the question is, is there some interest in such a driver? i hear you thinking how does the suspension work => electromagnetic and full adjustable. So the diy'er can play with the box volume, Fs, Q etc...
So, are there people who want pay money for such a driver? And how much would you consider to pay? I can tell for now that this is not a cheap driver (very difficult to make)
Also put a picture from the 3th generation as a dome for outstanding dispertion and low distortion (the phaseplug is now changed for a flat aluminium plug) . Cone setup is also possible.
Some advantages:
- Full lineair till X-max p-p 8mm. It compensate the less force of the voicecoil at high excursion due to lower springforce on this position, just in the same way but opposite)
- Small neo magnet so the magnet is almost inside the "dome"
- No spider => thus no backwave distortion on the spider
- Suspension is changable from zero till very stiff
- No surround => no counterforce on the edge of the cone => this greatly reduces flex of the cone and retain the linearity of the suspension.
- 10mm 0.2mm thick Alu ring on the outside of the cone (also greatly reduce flex of the cone) + very stiff and light carbon/kevlar cone treated with some damping material resulted in a very stiff and refined cone/dome. Not made with epoxy, don't like the sound of it.
- Very good airtightness on the edge of the cone. One alu ring on the inside and one on the outside.
Cheers,
Jef N.

Yes maybe I will ;-)
There are alot of Mark's on this forum but wich one is Mark from markaudio?

That'd be Mark Fenlon, who pretty much restricts his presence to his own commercial forum herein

Hi,
Nice job. Can you tell us a bit more about usable bandwidth, bass resonance frequency, sensitivity and so on, as well as intended retail price ? Thanks.

I am making 2 new drivers with other specs.
Usable bandwith was limited low end so I lowered Bl to get a more flat response curve. It was usable as 2 way but had to increase 50Hz with 5dB (range 3 octave) and lowered 1,8Khz (range 3 octave) with 4dB. The next version must be more flat. Fs around 39Hz, sensitivity 91dB, but the specs will be change with the next version. retail price will also be dependent on the final soundquality they produce. The problem with the version I'm making now is that they are one with the cabinet. The cabinet act like a sort of basket for the driver. But this is not necessary I can change that. I can only say for the moment I can't make the driver for less as 500euro each. So not cheap... but this is not mass production.

Hello Jef,
Thank you for all those details.
Sound extremely good to me. Your driver seems to work like the Leedh drivers, or close. I don't think the driver with its basket/cabinet is a big problem as long as it gives respectable bass performances. It could even be interesting for those who are not familiar with enclosure calculation.
We keep in touch, i would be pleased to listen to them when you think you are close to what you are looking for ;-)
Best regards,
Dominique

Thanks Dominique,
I didn't knew the leedh drivers, very interesting. Yes they are in some way simular. The main difference is that they don't have any suspension (only air in the cabin), I think aircompression is not lineair (logarithmic). I work the other way, as low as possible suspension from the air inside the cabinet and the EM-suspension will do the main part.
The motor structure is almost ready but I'm going on holiday so slight delay. I think the speakers must be ready somewhere in september.
Kind regards,
Jef

Hi Jef,
The air compression inside the Leedh driver has been made linear with a very specific shape of the magnetic structure. Have a look here Leedh - Acoustical Beauty - Enceintes acoustiques Leedh then you can have a pinacolada under the sun ;-)
Enjoy your holidays !
Cheers,
Dominique

Just back from Castelanne, très bel environnement! 🙂
But now back to business, just made my lathe today (short circuit) so a few days of work and the motorstructure should be ready.
Did read some articles about the leedh drivers and they look promising i must say. I will post again if the drivers are ready and the first parameters are known.
Take care

Final stage
Some update on the driver.
After a lot of tests this version will it be.
- paper cone
- build as one piece not as a part of the cabinet (commercial reasons)
Within a couple of weeks the first final version will be ready and implemented in a radial design.
For who is interested, in septembre we will show our speakers at the X-fi audio show. Since we got so good comments on the latest prototype of some speaker reviewers, stores and audiophiles we decided to enter the market with complete speaker sets and not only drivers.
We put it against the Gamut L5 and the magico V2, where everyone choose our speaker, that is a good start I guess ;-)
Comments are:
Life like, detail, clear, very transparant and wide soundstage.
