Hi everybody.
I'd like to start an autumn/winter project and build a power amp for my old Pi Speakers Theater Four (in a medium sized room). The question is: for those speakers is it would be better to build a F4 and drive it with a hi-gain tube preamp like an Aikido (6SN7 or 6CG7) or a F5 with a buffer like a B1 or an Aikido ACF?
In the past I had various solid state amps and a JEL 300B pair of DIY mono SET. Thanks in advance and sorry for my poor English!

living in Mecca of mcycles, cars and amp cases, why not both?
🙂
start with F4, whatever you build later , that one will stay

Build both sets of boards and one chassis/power supply. If you use spade connectors on the boards you can easily swap them in and out.

Your boob numbers are incorrect ZM.
You didn't count my supernumerary nipple. 😀

LOL! I still hope that someday I'll be able to hear those RCAs! 😀
You guys are clogging up this thread with talk of boobs...suggest you start your own thread on the topic if you want to persist.
amps are like boobs
that's all the same for me
🙂
Now that is a Zen moment. I'm going to reflect on that for a while.
Assuming you have a dac with 2V rms then 20dB is enough to clip the amp, but anything around 15dB and higher is probably adequate.

F4 - 24Vdc rails (nominally)
which means voltage envelope is 48V, without losses
so , preamp needs to give 48Vpp
48Vpp is (/2/1.41)= 16V97rms
usual line sorce nowadays is having 2Vrms
so, 17V/2V = 8.5 = 18.6db
consider recordings with lower level, add 3db
21.6db = 12x

That's a good point, regardless of the gain it will also need to be able to swing those voltages.
Thanks to both. My dac is set to 3.6Vrms (AA DDE 3.0) and I'm considering to build a new phono preamp to substitute my DIY ESP phono. Maybe a Pearl or a 834p.
