External subwoofer port.

I am going to make a subwoofer box for myself which will be made on assumptions so I was thinking that will it be a good idea to have a external port that will stay outside the enclosure. I want to do this so that it is easier to try different sized ports without opening the enclosure time after time and once I get my desired results I will add the final choice of port inside the box? Please give your thoughts on this.!!!!

You would then have to rebuild the box to a larger volume to account for the internal space the port occupies

Or lay a few bricks in the bottom of the enclosure while the port is external.
Remove bricks once you find a suitable length of port. It might not be excat, but it is usually close enough. Half a liter of air more or less is usually not noticable.
