I've agreed with another forum member to approach these folks and see what I can learn from them. Compatabillity of panels is my prime concern. If this controller can only run panels that are ...oh...say 17 inchs and larger then it is prety much useless to us as these panels are beyond the price range of reasonable DIY.
If there is a general concensus within the forum that I could be/should be the forums "emissary" I would be glad to see what sort of arrangements can be made.
If every other member is going to flood them with emails and phone calls they will NOT be receptive to a small OEM like me. So in short...if you all want to go at this independantly...count me out. If you want me to do some digging and "corporate wrangling" on behalf of the forum I'll be more than happy to do so 🙂
If this controller is even half as good as it looks I think it will suit our needs better than anything that has been presented to date. The Spectrah ARV units are limited to large panels and are quite expensive (double the price and then some). EVDisplays has stated (I'm told) that they have a 50 piece minimum order and that each unit comes with cables (plural). If this means all cables required to run various panels come with it then this is indeed a "Great Find"
I'll post my progress with them as it happens.
Anyone not want me to take this on?
Anyone going to "go it alone"?
Give me a show of hands folks and I/We can maybe get our hands on what looks to be a truly multipurpose controller for our DIY needs.
PS Merry Christmas to All 🙂

Count me in..
To me it sounds good if Zardoc takes the lead. The price quoted by EVDisplays in some previous thread sounds good. Lets now see if it fits our needs....
By the way I saw that Spectrah now also have lcd panels listed on their site. Would be interresting to see what their prices are.
Zardoc would you be able to find out next time you speak to them?

Sure I'll talk to my lady friend at Spectrah and see what she has to offer us. I had planned an email to her to wish her a Merry Xmas anyhow so I'll tie in a little business also 😉
So far there are 3 or 4 known members interested in the Condor card (me included)....40 some down the road and a bulk order would be "do-able" (assuming it will run available panels)

The ARV units are only for 17" and larger? That is terrible news. Is it possible that they were only tested to support 17", and that they still might work for newer 15" UXGA panels? The ARV has advantages over EVdisplay products because it supports UXGA while providing DVI and analog inputs, as well as multiple TTL and LVDS outputs. Anyways, don't worry about me- I won't bug them if you think it will screw up your relationship w/ them. If you could, see if they have a reseller. A lot of these companies have US and European clients who purchace a lot of units and will sell them individually.

The ARV 400 will handle down to 10 inch panels, I knew though that you were after an UXGA screen. The ARV400 doesn't do UXGA only as high as SVGA, however the ARV462 DOES do UXGA, but nothing listed less than 17 inchs. Now you and I are on the same page 😉 with thinking it's only the "tested" panels that they tell us about. There are too many panels for them to test them all.
here we go, I sit down for supper and come back to what I was saying and.....suddenly...I knew it wouldnt/couldnt last
OK 2 more sources for controllers.....what do you want me to do?
Research all of them?
I'm willing to do a favour, and a pretty big one at that. If you want a "research facility" you are going to have to fund that yourself.
A month ago nothing I posted was "worthy" of a decent and reasonable reply from you, now you want me to act the part of a lap dog?
Put up or shut up! I did!
I commited to a unit after some research and have achieved satisfactory results, I will have better results with a better panel. I took the shot, I'm watching Lord of the Rings on my wall right now. I have better things to do than play this kind of game.

I appologize for losing my temper. But you need to understand my position on this. I have put some time, money and effort into this and have enjoyed success. I am willing to help out any and all members in any way that I can.
But I'm not here to do research on ALL of the LCD controllers on the market, it seemed that the forum had found a really good option (I would credit the finder if I could locate the original post). You came into the thread and made a couple of good points, now you get all wishy washy on what unit to look at. I'm a 38 year old disabled army mechanic, I need a hobby not a headache or a job. Trying to set up a bulk purchase for the benefit of the forum members was about as far as I am willing to go. If you want to check out a unit check it out. You cant expect to ever go forward untill you COMMIT to something, if it takes much more time for you to make a decision LCD's will be defunct...replaced with holograms or something.
Lead Follow...or get the HECK out of the WAY!

You misunderstood. I wasn't asking you to do a thing. I just posted those links for everyone here because I thought you were saying that Spectrah did not make a controller that would drive a 15" UXGA panel (but you cleared that up and I'm happy). The links are just something for anyone who cares to look at. I don't expect you to, nor am I asking you to research anything. I would have gladly called Spectrah myself, but you said it was a bad idea for anyone here to do that, so I didn't. Anyways, I think everyone here is very grateful for your offer.

Again, I do appologize. The thing I got wired about was the fact that whatever is found it's never "good enough" for you. I know you want UXGA and thats fine, the only Spectrahs that are UXGA are only tested with 17 and larger panels. Even the ARV units that wont do UXGA are double the price of the Condor card, and in Taiwan so have heavy importation fee's attached. Now a very good allternative has been found for cheap at that. I do agree with you that a panel controller is preferable to a video card, so I am trying to help to secure us a source of supply for a cheap controller. I haven't heard anything about the pricing or buying policies from the 2 other controllers you linked, but considering the added capabillities of these 2 cards I'm willing to bet they are at least double the cost of the Condor. If you want I'll try to get a price for a one off engineering sample from them also so we can do some comparison. I think you will see a HUGE difference in cost. Adding to my frustration was the fact that this thread was setup to poll the forum members for the possibillity of making a bulk buy on this product, not to review all of the controllers out in the market today.
Maybe you could head up a thread for controller review/comparrison?
I do regret lossing my temper, that's not like me. I don't have anything against you personally. It just seems as though you are playing "one up" with every course that is decided on. I have been cautioned on the logistics of trying to organize a bulk buy in an enviroment such as this and then your post's came along as I was doing my best to make it possible. I saw (possibly incorectly) those posts as another "this isnt good enough" sittuation and needed to make a point. There will allways be "something better" We've been down that road before and I'd rather leave thos sort of issues in the past where they belong.

further to the cause..
In an effort to establish the price differances between UXGA controllers and SVGA controllers I will also look into the pricing on the "Flight" controller card that EVDisplays has to offer as it is UXGA capable. I fear the differance will be SIGNIFICANT and "cost prohibitive".

I hope the polling process isn't screwed up. Just a suggestion, if you do go through with this, you could do a dutch auction on ebay, let everyone here who wants a unit bid on one, and then order the total amount after the auction has ended. That way, everyone has commited to paying for it before you risk any money.

Yeah this method might be a good idea. I've seen many many people get ripped off over internet forums like this. Be very carefull zardoz.

Well I'll do what I have to to get one of these zardov so if you do the ebay thing I will bid for especially if it is safer for you.

If we can stay in the range...
If we can stay in the range of money that I saw before (<$150US) I'd be in, Zardoz. That, and of course being able to find suitable "budget" panels that it will drive. Not that you need to find the panels, too, just that we (I) need to know what to start looking for! 😀 An "ebay" type setup may provide the best solution. I'm not that familiar with how things work on ebay, but if you could set a price and take orders through there, that might provide you enough "protection".
P.S. I was suprised when you responded to Lifter this time, I didn't see what you had in his postings. I don't think Lifter meant any harm with his postings. That's the toughest thing about communicating strictly through the written word (e-mail), you just cannot put enough "inflection" or "body language" into it to keep from conveying a different message than was intended sometimes! I know I've written a few seemingly innocent ones at times that got an unexpected "hot" response in return!
Tonight my wife and I are going to watch "It's a Wonderful Life" on our projector.....
Merry Christmas to one and all! Smoke Eater

It's not problem. We had some words a while ago in a different thread. I'm over it and I'm sure he is too.
We all have our differances
I dont hold grudges, it's counter productive 😉 I look forward to pushing the DIY LCD projector concept as far as we can while still staying within the realm "affordabillity" I have sent email to EVDisplays indicating a desire to know more about both the condor and the flight modules. Also in my email I have asked if the 50 piece minimum could be made up of a mix of these modules, giving the opportunity for members that can afford or wish to spend more for the UXGA capable device. With luck we can have reviews on these pieces early into the new year, I dont expect too much action untill the hollidays are past. It seems it's only us whacky inventors that dont know when to take a break 😀 In the interest of really "fleshing out and order" I have sent preliminary information on these devices to friends and other business associates that might find value in this area of technology.
Peace on Earth....and all the other planets too 😉

I got the email back crom the guy here it is what it says. I'll just leave it alone now, and let Zardoz do his magic.
Hello Doug,
We can operate with any panel maker from a resolution level of VGA to XGA with this card! We need to do a controller bios for every one and of course cabling is differet also we do all of that here interally. I would want to know the application and maybe I could help you choose panels that are best suited for what you want to do.

This is a little problematic, I had hoped that the bios on these units was programable like the Spectrah card. So now it seems we will need to come to some sort of concensus as to what panels to use. If the mebers interested in these controllers want to go looking around at the various panels available we may yet prevail. Maybe 10 people want 12.1 inch sharp panels...25 want 15 inch dell panels etc.
This could get messy, as we all want different things I'll bet. It may not be a "do able" thing, and that would be a shame 🙁 A quick search of surplus traders was very dissapointing one result is as follows:
SHARP LQ10P011 10.4" TFT LCD SCREENS
Sharp LQ10P011 10.4" TFT LCD screens in clean and unused condition. These displays are suitable for projection type multimedia application since the backlight system is not installed. Contact Norman today - 514 731 8335 $450.00 Ea. 2 in stock. DB625
They make the fact that the backlight is not installed sound like this is a great deal, as if removing the backlight is a chore we would now be spared. And CHECK THE PRICE!
Not good news indeed 🙁
