Hello Chaps,
SWMBO asked me yesterday what I wanted for Xmas.
I was thinking about an ESR meter.
There are a few different ones availalbe, any recommendations please?
Thanks!

lots of folks on the Yahoo Tek Scopes group opine on this -- there are great ESR meters in kit form.

I know this is not what you're wanting. But it might be helpful, in a pinch:

I was lucky enough to get an LCR meter for free. Since then I have used it so much that I can not imagine not having one. My advice is go out and buy one; in audio they are nearly as useful as a DMM.
I agree, an LCR meter is essential for the DIY audio hobbyist. An ESR meter, however, is also essential if you do much repair. A decent ESR meter will let you spot bad parts in-situ, whereas an LCR meter is near to worthless for that. Not having an ESR meter, I usually pull parts or do the manual method linked above.

Sadly, these days, I tend to end up repairing stuff more than building it.
I thought it would be a useful addition to my bench.

Hello all--newcomer here,
I just purchased a Peak ESR70 a couple weeks ago, in deference to the "blue" kit, and found this thread while searching for more info. It works quite nicely however I found the leads to be absurdly short and the supplied crocodile (alligator here in Florida) clips to be worthless for in-circuit testing.
The lead length was an easy fix, I cut the twin coax line off of a cheap set of "ear-buds" and used both the shield and center of each cable for each pole of the tester's input.
To address the in-circuit issue I made up a set of tweezers from Popsicle sticks--nothing magical in the construction, just cut the pieces/parts to fit and glue 'em up--I built up each leaf (tweeze?) with stacked pieces to provide a grip and then applied the heat-shrink tubing.
The probe tips are 1" brass escutcheon pins bent up as needed and epoxied in place--I have since bent the probe tips inward so as to grab solder pads more forcefully. In use I clip the croc's to the exposed head of the pins.
It all works well and will calibrate to 0.00Ω with no problems...
