In the case of an ESL headphone, the dimensions are much smaller than an ESL speaker.
So, imo absorptive material placed in close proximity to the stator should not effect the sound in a negative manner - especially if it is not hard nor presenting a single clear transition from air to a material... Otoh, this is not commonly done as a closed ear ESL headphone. Afaik many headphones do use some absorptive material going to the "outside" world...
