Hi Rio,
My suggestions were to improve the HF performance by increasing drive and interemitter cap of the drivers. I should have suggesting 2SC4793/2SA1937 Toshiba drivers which I've always found outstanding transistors, but they may be tricky to buy in Indonesia.
Hugh
Those transistors is quite easy in Solo city (I believe you're familiar with my hometown, Solo), but i found 2SC5171 is cheaper. Rp.15000 vs Rp. 10000.
I'd try to swap with 2SC5171 tomorrow. Thanks Pak Dean.
Salam,
Rio
Hi all ..newbie here.just got emprit amp pcb today and will populate the pcb soon.

Hello bimo.I tried one of your preamps.i really like it but i have a question. For transistors Q1,Q3,Q5,Q6,Q7 you specify 2SC1845 and 2SA992. I have used 2N5401 and 2N5551 always paying attention to pinout compatibility.I also have access to BC550C and BC560C. which ones do you think sound better?

What type of led should i use on the preamp? The red one i am using now has a forward voltage of 1.6V and gives about 15ma of current at the output stage BD139/140.I also have some red leds with 1.9V forward voltage.

Thank you bimo. This is the pcb i made for your preamp.I really enjoy it.
I have also built this retro amp with CFP output from this thread Bigun's TGM8 with Single Supply but i have some concerns about values of capacitors C6,C7 and resistors R16-R17,R21-R22
I have seen in other threads that you can make modifications to designs which result in good sound. Can you suggest any mod to this amp?.I am also attaching the LTSpice file.

Bimo, do you think it's simple?
Look at Nelson's amps, they are simple.
This is more of a regular "blameless" amp.

It is depend... Do you think a mosfet with trafo?
But my interest is make a cheap amplifier, simple as possible, and use easy to find transistors in my country. Of course it must "good enough" for me.
Bimo,
Sorry for slow reply.
Yes, you can leave the drivers unsinked, a BD139/140 is fine but generally I find the faster devices, the C4793/A1837 are the best (30MHz). There may be Japanese version which are faster than the 39/140, as the other Indonesian poster mentioned in Solo.
You need a bit more current through the drivers to move charge into and out of the output bases. They are a large die, and high input capacitance, like a mosfet. This improves the top end hugely, as long as the cap is polystyrene with low dielectric.

Maybe Toshiba TTC004B/TTA004B?

Perceived HF is not well correlated with electrical HF response. For a start I'd make C9 a lot larger, at least 47pF and maybe as high as 100pF to keep the thing stable. Best to use polystyrene. But high frequency is not as good as I tough. A friend choose NJW0281/NJW0302 for output transistors and said the high frequency is slightly better.
Grounding arrangements and PSU (not shown in your schematic) will also have a sonic effect.
Lot's of things will effect the sound but these two areas are good places to start.

This amplifier is stable. Enough phase margin and gain margin.
I have design an amplifier with much better of high frequency quality than this amplifier. The amplifier using "blameless topology" (according Mr. Douglas Self) with TMC compensation. One of the best sound engineer in my country, compared it with his U$2000 amplifier said my amplifier slightly better 😎 although my amplifier is much cheaper. So, if I said the high frequency quality is not good enough, it compare at least with U$2000 amplifier.

This is my modification.
