Elipticor Midrange

Some of you may have seen the delicious pics from Munich posted recently and noticed larger ScanSpeak Elipticor drivers. Today I was notified that there is a new, and curious, midrange available.

Dome, close backed, 3 Ohm minimum, power TBD. The frequency response is curious, but I can see if this is used with the matching tweeter maybe they will have the same acoustic distance, making crossover design easier?

Too high FS, to high Qt. Promises of low distortion but never any measurements or figures. Breaking up at 5k...I think that they need to step up here. And I saw some measuremnts somewhere and I wasn't to impressed really. Emperors new clothes? yes being grumpy this evening 🙂 Key feature: Optical ring ... bling bling LOL... ;-D going downhill....

That's a good thing if the acoustical center are aligned to a tweeter, but it would be even better if the directivities of the crossed drivers are similar around the xo region. Shame that Scan-Speak doesn't have a solution for this latter, only the "boring" flat faceplate tweeters without waveguides.

Btw the frequency response (off axis too) looks good up to 4kHz, nice!

I just don't trust that elliptical VC. I don't know what would happen to that complicated shape if there's even a slight amount of thermal stress. I would like to hear from actual users of ellipticor drivers if they hold up over time and the occasional heavy hand of the volume control.

The 3" ATC mid dome is a force to be reconed with and I've yet to hear a comparable dome mid. The SS D7608-9200 can sound quite close but doesn't have the low end capability. It is the lesser evil 3" mid dome driver IMO and there are some tricks to making it sing, but it will never be close to the ATC. The Volt 3" mid dome has other issues that are a deal breaker for me when used with a passive xover.

Qts doesn't matter as it can be shaped in the high-pass and the FS is lower than any other dome mid I can remember. What is it you're expecting?

The breakup is going to be benign in that it's unlikely to affect the harmonic distortion besides this shouldn't be used up particularly high anyway to maintain decent off axis performance with the c2c distance and whatever the chosen tweeter is.

Regarding the lower end though, this has the xmax to backup it's extended lows. Hopefully it can be used down to 300-400Hz depending on your SPL requirements.

ScanSpeak 50th anniversary ....D8404/552000 midrange dome is the only large midrange dome ever made with an elliptical voice coil, double spider and a gigantic magnet system delivering some 92-93 dB sensitivity. It's the heart of the system and it's a game changer in handling some four octaves from around 300 Hz and way into the treble range. Not having any crossover in this region pays off. Truly the best speaker I have ever made.

Kms(x) flatness and symmetry is very important. At least as much as BL(x).

now Scan has always had a handle of designing good soft parts; spider/surround and other moving parts/suspension. For almost 2 decades their 18W/8545 was unbeaten in terms of mid-bass; and when it was released in 1985 or thereabouts it had an incredibly soft/pliable surround and never before heard of 6.5mm xmax.

To me, soft/moving/suspension parts has come back to the forefront as being critically important. Even if your motor is Mazda ing as soon as the driver starts moving a few mm everything can go out the window. As illustrated by @lrisbo from Purifi, optimising their surround for neutral Sd and reinforcing cone-edge joint on the back side of the driver.

If someone can do a midrange that can go wide and deep, Scan can do it.

@HiFiCompass are these on your radar?

It’s time to start saving my shitsvillian micro pesos, or go looking and shortlisting midranges from professional/PA manufacturers. Eg. Sica, BMS, Lavoce, 18Sound
