Raw materials coming out of Africa, where the "west" is being kicked out one country after another, after exploiting them for they're natural resources, and what not. And so on.
None of those things are controlled by audio manufacturers.
They still need to keep they're profits and pay they're workers enough too, as with any company.

As for SS Ellipticors in general, they are overpriced for what you get.
There has also been plenty of issues with quality, relating to the elliptical voice coil /dome , that does not belong in that price range, more to be expected from 10$ drivers from China.
The difference is that the $10 Made in China drivers are made on assembly lines by a machine, enabling such a high level of consistency.
