Eliminate Member Rankings And Post Count

don't you guys think it's kinda childish to care? It's just a little title and a number. I've had 4000 posts in a forum but respected all the other members with 10 posts or under just as much. I just don't think it's a big deal...

edit: you could also have custom user titles. It will add to your personalilty on forums and take away the rankings.

countless crap......

Hi all,

Plewis (and Brett, who came up first with that suggestion), IMHO this is useless. What for do you then have your signature and avatar? I think these are sufficient ways to express one's unique personality, eh? 😉 🙂

cocolino, your idea is good, but is it really necessary to have such a vote- system? Methinks that it's a very useful and necessary on ebay, where you buy stuff from anonymous people, so that is the only way for providing at least some security. But why the heck should we have something like that, if we already have an excellent moderators staff :cop: :firefite: :sarge: :captain: :wiz: :judge: to fight :headshot: :witch: :Pinoc: :Pirate: or :troll: ??😕 😕

You don't need any vote system to recognize an a$$hole!!!

and moderators, please don't introduce a keystroke count, you're digging your own grave!! You will certainly have to hunt down some idiots that try to cheat by using the copy/paste- function.

conclusion: abolish the titles, but don't change anything else, please!!

I agree, get rid of the post count.. (before halojoy gets to 1000)

I have been accused of posting just to up my count... well, I did for a while to see how hard it would by to catch up to halojoy and beat him to 1000, but I found it was rather impossible.. 😛 so I gave up.. lol.. yeah, I don't mind wether I have a post count or not...
Don't ask a question... halojoy might know an answer...

"BE LIKE HALOJOY, BE LIKE HALOJOY!!!"
Chocolate makes my fingers hurt..

Skinnyboy, I suggest that you show everybody that you can stand above halojoy and change your signature!

(Likewise I suggest that halojoy change his......in order to raise his level....)

Plewis:
I agree with You that it`s a minor detail but Audio DIYers care about the most "minor"(*) and "childish" (*) things (*don`t want to step on anybodys feet .....or on my own😉 ) so why not improve this when there is something to improve (what it is IMO) or to leave it away when it`s good for nothing (or eventually even might harm).
I think the are trying to turn off the incentive for some very childish people on this site that post only to have a high number of posts-pathetic really.
Variac:
I for me am little sensitive and do not care too much about those (although sometimes it can become a little annoying) but to remove or to change the existing title system would have it as a nice side effect to reduce this also.
cocolino, your idea is good, but is it really necessary to have such a vote- system?
Bob:
As I said it`s a minor detail and it`s not "necessary" at all but when a change (to hopefully something better not worse) should be made finally (what`s still under discussion oppositely) why not a vote-system (besides technical issues which I do not have a clue of)?

Brett,

It seems dave (planet 10) got the joke but you didn't.
sorry, I missed that.

Skinny, in your case (and halo's as well) we should really make an exception. 😀

edit\
cocolino, IMHO the technical side is the big problem. The benefits of the vote system wouldn't outweigh the additional work Jason and his little helpers would have. To put it in german: "Der Kosten- Nutzen- Faktor ist für'n Arsch" 😉 😀

Well Bob, that`s a reason and that I can understand in contrary to
You don't need any vote system to recognize an a$$hole!!!

BTW: Altough it`s nice from You that You explained it so well in German I have understood in English already 🙂

Sorry!!!

Cocolino,

I'm sorry that you did get the impression my comment
You don't need any vote system to recognize an a$$hole!!!
was aimed at you. Nor should it make a angry impression. I should perhaps had added a nice smiley like this: 🙄 to make it more obvious. The german comment was made for the fun of it........

Thank you for your patient manner, it honors you........ 🙂🙂

Many exceptions have been made for me.... many have been made by me... I am an exception..
🙂 🙂 🙂 🙂

I'm sorry that you did get the impression my comment ......
Bob:
Really much appreciated that You care for it but I think I understood Your comment and I have not related it to me personally. I just found it somewhat exaggerated and not a real reason speaking against my suggestion whereas for instance technical issues are as You expressed correctly in the later post.
So I have no hard feelings at all.
Just wanted to clear this finally.🙂
The german comment was made for the fun of it........
My English respond too.....😉

further suggestions.......

Hey all,

other criteria for ranking could be:

-time spent logged in at diyaudio.com

-SinBin sentences

-number of emoticons used: total count, frequency (per post or per day)

-avatar/signature changes: total count, frequency (in different variations, see emoticons)
( hey, we could vote on each other's avatar's as well!!! )

-private messages sent (once private messaging is enabled😀 )

Hmmm, that just seems to tricky.. do you lose points for emoticons? or gain points.. 🙂 😀 😛 :S :bawling: Nah, thats a bad idea...

Time spent logged in.. hmm, some people might work, and leave there computer on all day.. 😛

avatar/sig... well, I am bad at names, and tend to recognise people by their picture.. 🙂
change it, and I AM LOST!!

yeah, private messages maybe.. 🙂

How about this:
You guys forget about this idiotic idea of 'ranking' and I forget that there are members here that NEVER posted anything outside the EVERYTHING ELSE section of the forum.

No wonder we need moderators around here. This is one of those times when I am glad DIYaudio is NOT a democracy. Contrary to some I have been on this forum when there was no sin bin, no moderators, no censorship of any kind. In those days you could call a moron a moron. No need for passive aggressive-politically correct-numb skulled-sissy mannered "rankings".

And how about that one:

You learn to distinguish serious posts from fun making
before insulting other people, and I forget your bullying, OK??

If you had just taken the time to read my previous posts in this thread, you'd gotten my opinion.......

Just an idea:

When you write a message (new or answering), you could be able to categorise your own post by a checkbox. The categorys could be something like this:

- Question
- Short answer to technical issue
- Major contribution. Article, longer posts, etc.
- Joke

Then each category of posts could give a number of points that affected the ranking. For instance would a joke not push your rankings, but a major article would.

Or:

Make a voting system. If someone write a post I find usefull, I could vote for it. This would make the ranking 'democratic'. Then you could see the 'noise floor' by holding no. of posts up to no. of votes.

This is just a sketch of ideas. Weather this is usefull or how to implement them, I don't know.

Bob
if you read my post carefully you would see I never 'insulted' anyone. The noun after the adjective is 'ideas'.
I merely used your post as a representative example of what was bothering me. So unless you have other reasons for feeling that I struck a nerve, like spending too much time in "fun making" and the 'Everything else' section, I suggest you move on.

Here is an  for the moderators that would solve 99.9% of the problems:

10 post in a "real" audio forum for every 1 post in the Everything Else section.

50 real posts give you the right to start a thread in the E.E.

Anything less than that you keep your mouth shut or mind real audio business.

You didn't point out, so I felt offended.

move on to what???

and just to mention it: yes, I recently have posted mostly in the EE section, but that's none of your business..........
