Hey folks,
because my case is redy to go outside I have done so 🙂)
There were different kombinations:
My favorites are #2 and #4, the Infinitys are more family with this amp.
Hey folks,
because my case is redy to go outside I have done so 🙂)
There were different kombinations:
- B&W 801d with Ayre K-5xe preamp and audioNet g3 CDP
- same speaker with T&A Musikplayer
- same speaker with Pro-Ject pre and DAC
- Infinity Speaker with some keramik chassis and Pro-Ject equipment
My favorites are #2 and #4, the Infinitys are more family with this amp.
Hey, you did say B&W 801 eh? Hmmm....me too, please!
Is the second channel in the ES OK now, Volker?

Rudi, this is easy with paper/phenolic boards. It works well as you see in all the Wall-mart amplifiers. In glassfibre/epoxy boards, it doesn't give so good results. Mass- produced ones are made with long, narrow slots instead. These are expensive to punch. A printed line would be cheaper and you use a fine hacksaw. It kills the small saw but blades are cheap.
I had some phonolic prototype boards recently. Terrible stuff in my opinion. They are in the trash.
I think you are right, it's better to use good quality glassfibre. I don't see any need for a break-off section myself. Even if you wanted a separate psu it never hurts to have those additional capacitors on the amplifier board, just install some links instead of the rectifier diodes. Too many options is bad for the beginner that you are targeting here.
Also for beginner, use large solder pads. This allows components to be more easily removed when they are installed incorrectly or destroyed by junior DX members - small pads are more likely to lift-off and ruin the pcb.
Thank you very much Ekkart, by your review..also Ian Finch
Rudi and Bigun.
Hommemoder.... Lilí is mine!
ahahahhahahah!

I have not yet begun trouble-shooting.
I am very busy all the time supporting METAL and the DX Blame project.

Ekkart you have a lot of guts, I have a pair of 804s, B&W are trully great speakers and I would never power them with a yet unproven amp still in development or without any kind of speaker protection.
What a waste it would be if something went wrong..........
Thanks for the link and gee...only 11,000 euros! I'd better take all the stock as well.
I have spent something though, the parts to build the main ES board are ordered - no turning back now!

Of course there are speakerprotections build in, and this amp, my first one, is playing daily since 4 months, so there is no surprise that can wreck some speakers ;-)or without any kind of speaker protection.
Fuse is enougth protection....2.5A if you gonna use 8 ohms and 5.0A to 4 ohms
and this is enougth.
More sophisticated protections, of course, are welcome..but really, a fuse is enougth.
If the guy is tollerant to distortions, then he can increase to 3.0, or 3.15A and 6A.... can use fast blow or slow blow, depending the user style...if he is a deaf monster (ahahahahah!) then should use bigger and slow blow fuses.

Carlos

This picture:
will cause a shock to METAL 😱 .
Don't look at polarities and at values ...
This picture says nothing but:
"Boss" has learnt a lot in the meantime, is able to do the EAGLE-design by himself, will never (?) be as sophisticated as YOU, but ...
This is what makes DIY so "cool", interesting, thrilling: learning, approving or not, comparing with one's own audiophile experiences, researching, ...
@METAL: I am looking forward to your next step.

You destroyed the board, I will just kill you Rudi 😀
You have achieved good progress in Eagle, congrats Rudi 🙂 Still I am better 😎 And this is a really an old and early version of the board, the way C16 was placed irritated you so much 😛 remember 🙄
I have a better way to deal with this one, look at the attached image.

Looks neat
But having onboard supply caps only makes sense to me if they are placed close to outputs

Please, METAL: let me stay alive! 🙂
Your name will be famous one day.
You will be the one who resurrected Carlos' most beautiful sounding (I can swear you) AMP (the DX Blame) to life.
The DX Blame will kick most of the AMPs you ever heard into trash.
Keep this in mind - and now: go on with the PSUs, please.

I dont understand why you say a seperate PSU will be a mess
It only needs to be prepared properly
Shouldnt be too hard to make it very neat if you design a matching PSU with logical layout designed especially to connect with your AMP board
But its your show

It is a matter of taste. Some think that PSU on the AMP PCB is a mess, others think that a separate PSU is a mess, just a matter of taste.
I received many PMs asking me to make the PCB with a PSU, others without. I am going to make it with the PSU, and it will be usable for both parties, spades and connections to fit both tastes.
I think the AMP will look nice with the PSU on board.
Rudi will just prototype 2 PCBs, he will test one, and Carlos will test as well. If everything goes as planned, Rudi will place an order for the PCBs to be professionally manufactured. I am planning to show values of components on silkscreen, will modify some components shapes to make them look better, with notes on those that differ between ES and ST versions of the amplifier.

Not my amp.
😀😀😀
On a more serious note, actually if you built John Linseys Hood s version which Doctor Self has basically made his own would you listen to the best so called Blame Amp, one could have done this back in 1979 when he designed it. I built it as a teenager back in 85. The only difference in the amps is how they compensated, JLH could teach D Self a thing or two about compensation to get good sound and still have excellent THD figures. BTW this amp had a current source on its vas.
Then around 1983 JLH changed output configuration to lateral mosfet based leaving the frontend the same. He sure knew how to get good sound from amps as some prefered this mosfet unit, no this is not his published mosfet amp.
Carlos who is this Lillie you keep refering to ???
On our beaches during summer you can find thousands of brazilian lillies here........😀😀😀
My wife's name is Lilí.... second "i" we pronounce stronger here
Lilih may be the name to write in English maybe.
