Sounds like a good plan. ECC82s are as good as you need for cathode follower duty, IMHO. I just wouldn't use them in grounded cathode or LTP stages.

Why is that? I was just about to start working on a phase splitter design using 12AU7 with a tube based CCS for the tail. I don't know if it would work out yet (trying to drive parallel 6L6 power tubes) I just happen to have abut 30 of each of these two kinds of tubes. I can use 12ax7 if more gain is required but I'd hopped to put the AU7 types to good use.
I drove parallel 6P3S tubes in my first Pyramid by long tailed 6N1P, directly without any cathode followers.

I just think there are more linear tubes than the AU7 with similar electrical characteristics. (e.g. 6CG7, 6FQ7).
Why is that?
High third and fifth order distortion. A 12AT7 will work much better, and at the same mu, a 6SN7 or 6CG7 will work much, much better.
