You'll have to print one because I honestly don't know what you're talking about. 2% is -33dB-ish? 5% in the mid-20s? Which curves?
xiphmont said:I won't buy their batteries anymore. They've left me high and dry during live performances too often. I can't run up on stage to change the AAs in someone's wireless microphone when it inexplicably only lasts ten minutes from 'new in the box' to 'dead on stage/inaudible soloist' when it should have lasted ten hours. I swear one in ten of RS batteries does this. I've never had that problem with Energizer or the Duracell ProCells.
Here in Oz, RS is called Tandy. I got started in electronics buying stuff from them, having no idea just how much they were ripping me off. It took me two weeks in 1990 to save enough pocket money just to buy a 555 timer, which they were selling at the time for $3.99 a pop, individually packaged.
Then a new retailer popped up an extra 30 minutes of pushbike pedalling away called Force Electronics, so I went in there one day, specifically to by a 555 timer. I almost fell over when the guy behind the counter said "that will be 65 cents mate".
I've hated Tandy ever since.
Oh, and they're LM3886 powered, Cinemag input stage. Ruler-flat. "Done".
Xiphmont,
These monitors are pretty impressive. National has come out with a new amp input chip the LM4702. You should consider upgrading. My friend in the National audio department says it sounds a lot better than the LM3886.

But the perfect amplifier is not the same for every speaker. And it may change if you change the amplifier to speaker attachment device.

Hey guy - thanks for lettng me know which way you stand. I can be hard to tell sometimes from the posts. Sorry if I misread you.
Perhaps we need an "On the Fence" catagory.
I'll revise the list in about 12 hours, after more have reported in.
The idea of the list was not to divide up camps, really. Just to get an idea of how many voices there were here for one opinion or the other. It seemed that those who believe amps sound the same were gettting drowned out by those who do not.
Clever way not to use the "C" word. 😉

BTW, I meant the amp was ruler-flat. The cabs still need some work.
(How can you tell if it's impressive? I haven't even posted a pic! Maybe my handiwork is all shoddy 🙂
As for upgrading, I see no need. I've not found anything with the 3886 I'm dissatisfied with. Not in this design anyway. Eventually I'd like to move beyond AB, but mostly for purposes of efficiency.
I would like, to contribute to the question, ask: Does all female singers sound the same?
Think about it for a while and post your replies.
I have owned a variety of amplfiers in my 10 years in the hi-fi world and I can with all certainty tell you that each amp has got its own unique sonic fingerprint.

Re: Re: Yes, No, I don't know
I have a believe, if something sound to be too good to be true it normally is. From what I've read I have my doubts about the true intent of the "test".
Further, I don't have to prove anything to anybody, as I've said earlier, if you don't hear a difference, good for you, it surely is much cheaper.
xipmont, if you rate a 3886 as a hi-fi amplifier, we surely have different meanings for that word. I think it is a good small PA amplifier and that is what I use them for.

Let's do a quick and dirty cost benefit analysis.
Cost of roundtrip ticket and not working for a few days, let's say absolute worst case $10000. Thus, if you fail to detect a difference, the net is -$10000. If you succeed, $1000000 - $10000 = $990000. Let the probability of success (you can hear the difference) be p. Then the expected net money you'll make is $990000 * p - $10000 * (1 - p)
This is a positive number for any p > 1/100. So if you think you have a better than 1% chance of success, you have no reason not to go for it.
Now let's see what excuse you'll come up with next 🙄

Re: Re: Re: Yes, No, I don't know
That's exactly what I'm saying. I've not seen anyone here prove otherwise in controlled conditions.
I'm located in Somerville, MA as the little sidebar says. I also promise I'm much nicer in person. 🙂 If anyone nearby would like to have a friendly (and I do mean friendly) double blind at either your or my place, I'd love to do so. LM3886 vs whatever you want to put up against it. We can verify the signal response is flat from both, then have a nice listen over coffee and muffins.
I have to warn you though, my place is a complete mess. And if you have electrostatics that you think can make the difference in hearing between the amps, we probably ought to use those.
The way I look at it, I either get to win a small part of the argument, or I hear the difference myself and prove I've got ears beyond mortal man. It's a win-win 🙂
But... pinking and levelling both first is a hard and fast requirement. I have the tools to do that (assuming you trust digital).

Re: Yes, No, I don't know
I don't think these categories make sense.
I don’t think that all amplifiers sound different, nor do I think that all amplifiers sound the same.

Here is a little list.
Please forgive me if I got you in the wrong camp.
The "Unknown" are the posters that I could not tell which side they may be on, or if they are even on a side.
If I've got you misplaced and you want me to change your preference, please let me know.
BTW, this list is just meant to give an quick idea of what the people on this thread think. It isn't subtle, as there are only 3 choices. 🙂
Sound the Same

Sound Different

Well I don’t know why it shouldn’t be clear because those two statements aren’t in the least bit contradictory.
It’s the fact that some dogmatically attribute these untenable categories to themselves that makes these threads go endlessly and pointlessly round in circles.............
The way I see it is that theoretically amps with similar specifications should sound the same. Problem is that in reality it is quite difficult to make two channels of the same amplifier sound identical.
Then also I believe that the type of music you play will determine how important these differences are. If you like to listen to unamplified acoustical instruments and "normal" 😀 voice you need good eqiupment to really appreciate it. If you like to make noise, almost anything will do.

I don't think the quality of reproduction is that important to notice differences. Our hearing abilities differ by orders of magnitude compared to the equipment.
Around 1983 several of my buddies and myself owned the famous NAD 3020. It was the first British amp i ever owned and i was (briefly) enthusiastic about it's sound. I had several pairs of speakers: Cerwin Vega(?), JBL L112 and Boston Acoustics A40; source was a Thorens TD160 with Ortofon MC10. Home-made single core speaker cables and horrific ICs. Believe it or not - a dedicated power line.
One of my buddies somehow (better hearing) noticed that one of the 3020s played significantly better than the rest. Being the only "technical" person i immediately objected as it sounded quite unthinkable that commercially made, identical amps may sound different, let alone anyone would notice such a difference without an A/B.
Eventually we put the three amps together at my place and it quickly became obvious that all three sounded very different indeed. I kept them all for a few days and examined the internals with a magnifying glass.
It turned out they were not so identical: different ouput transistors (Motorola and RCA i think), different electrolytic caps and even different thermal fuses at output.
I certainly learnt the first of many similar lessons: practically everything makes a difference and there is a large number of people who have more perceptive hearing than myself.

Are all analogies equally poor?

I'm with Glenn on this one, the categories don't make any sense to me and seem designed to automatically lead to confusion.
Is there a category for "All demonstrable audible differences in electronics have rational and measurable explanations which comport with the basic laws of physics." ?
Is there a category for "All demonstrable audible differences in electronics have rational and measurable explanations which comport with the basic laws of physics." ?
Yes, SY - and your in it. 😉
Why on earth would I design categories to automatically lead to confusion? Certainly not trying to pigeon hole anyone nor to "automatically lead to confusion." 🙄
