Proto 5,
There is no question that the X1 has better detail but those colors don't look balanced to me. But like you said it was right out of the box. The one issue I wonder about however is that is the DIY inferior on detail because of the LCD or poor optics. My feeling is that looking at the LCD straight on would seem clearer than the projection. Maybe not, but my feeling is that OHP optics are of only marginal quality and the fresnel blurs the image too much.
We are never going to get as bright a picture with the DIY approach we are using as a commercial projector of the same wattage because those small LCD's are optimized for transmissiveness. They are far more efficient and are purpose designed for thier intended use.
Hezz

pronto 5,
I want to make sure I understand you clearly. You are saying that the x1 which is only 800x600 res blows away your diy lcd projector at 1024x768 res correct?
Now which lcd are you using? Do you have fresnels in the image path? If the you dont have fresnels in the image path of your diy projector would you say the result of the x1 being sharper still is due to the much higher contrast?

I have seen this projector x1 in action. I dont see the rainbows but you may. You need to go and see for yourself or just buy it and make sure you can return it after you tried it. Not sure how to describe the rainbow but people that see it get a headache.
Its only good for viewing in total darkness for a good image.

regarding the rainbow effects on the X1, i've heard that you can use a 62mm polarized camera filter on the lense to reduce/eliminate the rainbow effect. has anyone tried this and does it work?
You can reduce the rainbow effect with a faster color wheel or eliminate it with a multi chip setup(no wheel), but both come with a higher cost.
i've heard it is possible to eliminate or drastically reduce the rainbow effect on the INFOCUS X1 with a polarized lens. id much rather spend $30 on a filter than buy a much more expensive projector.
i was gonna go DIY... but got an X1 instead... 870 on employee discount with a 100 dollar MIR... so 770... yea, it was worth it... 1/2 the price of a puney 51inch projection bigscreen
bulb life and warranty were my 2 main reasons for choosing it... has a 2 year warranty compared to the others 1 year... and a 4,000 hour bulb life, which doesn't sound that impressive till you think about it..
that's 2,000 movies... or... to last you 2 years, that's like 5 1/2 hours of television each day... i don't watch alot of TV, i just watch dvd's and divx's off of my laptop, and it's great for that... it wasn't the brightest projo that bestbuy sold, but i bought it anyway... and i can watch it in my living room in the middle of the day.. long as the living room light is off, it's watchable.. other lights in the house don't seem to interfere that much... although nighttime is definitely the best time to be watching movies
rainbow effect, what is that ?
