DIY vs. INFOCUS X1 DLP

Hehe sorry Lifter, but you are wrong. At AVS the consensus is that the X1 is by far the best pj under $2000.
I've seen it in action (my brother bought one) and it easily outperforms my XGA toshiba TLP-670. Practically no screendoor effect at whatever size you project (no visible gaps between pixels unlike LCD). Amazing contrast, and very nice brightness.
The only disadvantage is the rainbow effect. I've seen it and have to say that it really s*cks. It reminds you that you are looking at the action and not part of the action. This is a real shock! 🙂
But then you realise that with other pj's you never feel part of the action so.....
The resolution is no problem for whatever you feed it. The scaling is much better than with other pj's.
Just don't go browsing with it.

X1

Lifter:
I've had my X1 for a couple weeks now......It blows away my DIY setup. I've only seen a couple rainbows so far- it's not a big deal at all. Will post screenshots this weekend. And rapsac is correct- 99% of the feedback on the X1 is OMG!

Well i think that the x-1 is a decent projector for a reality price, i think this $2000+ ******** is pathetic unless your going for somthing like a barco and they are not $2000 as we all know, prices in projectors are rediculously way over priced hence the fact we all went diy at one stage, realy personally i think jcb is right , this is a great learning curve for everyone and i recon we all should do it to even get to know what projection is all about for when we get that steal deal, lets face it, the x-1 is a steal for price, size and quality, and for technology. I know id buy one if i had the cash lol i dont care the rainbow afect, its still cheaper then a plasma for the size it projuces in the end, and no tv/monitor is perfect, its just the shame about the bulb price of these things but its like anything, some one somwhere has to rip u off somwhere lol just like cars, but anyway good on you guys who went and got a x-1 and get those screen shots happening.

I had a lot of negative things to say a while back about buying CRT projectors. The main reason for this, was because like you, I thought a decent CRT projector w/ HD capability is $5k minimum. I was wrong. NEC XG75s and Sony 127xs can be had for under $1000, and I would reccomend those over any DLP if you don't NEED something portable. That includes a Runco DLP, as well as the cheapest DLP in existence (the X1).

Huh?

Jcbklyny:

Gee, I only paid $940 for the X1 shipping and all.......I had about $700 in my high end DIY setup and sold the parts for about $500. So for the extra $440 I think it was well worth it! Sorry for the wait on the screenshots- I've been waiting for an adapter cable so I can use the X1's kick-*** Faroudja descaler instead of the progressive output from my DVD player.

Rapsac:
Those elitist powernerds in the AVS CRT forum are going to call even a $10K projector crap! That's why they are in the "CRT" forum!!!

lifter/jcb

heya lifter yeah your right about the crt route, for the same price as a diy setup with a ohp u can get a semi decent crt, id get one but i dont have the darn room and the shipping kills, but in terms on the portable projectors now days as in new, i think the price is rediculous, yeah it has come down but i think the x-1 is well worth it and more the realistic price we consumers should be paying, but anyway the bulb is another issue ill stop at that lol.

jcb
yeah $940 for the ex-1 bud

Even at $940 I dont see a big difference and would still take my DIY over it any day. Nither technology is perfect and both have their advantages and disadvantages.

As far as I can see the only thing the X1 has over my setup is contrast and unit size itself. My setup may have screen door when you sit too close to the screen... while the X1 has a nasty rainbow effect during some scenes no matter where you sit... so the way I look at it... we're even.

You people looking for a perfect world and perfect projector are gonna be looking for a looooong time! 🙂 There has to be some give and take.

Not to mention the fact that your comparing a DLP projector to LCD projectors. You can do that with commercial units on both sides and still get mixed reviews.

Xbox

Well...I was used to playing MechAssault on my 50" RPTV at 480p resolution. It was crystal sharp and bright as hell. When connecting to my DIY through a 9a62 component to VGA adapter, I lost ALOT of brightness.......to the point that I wouldn't use the DIY for Xbox. The X1 has enough lumens that this is not an issue.

proto/jcb

yeah well thats another issue to do with brightness and thats the source signal level, im courious to see if there is such a measure for the source signal level when they measure the ansi on pro projectors, one that might say its say 500lm ansi with a source signal from an xbox might be actally 550lm ansi with a comp, or even 600 ansi, so realy i think the ansi level we will have to take with a grain of salt and just use that as a wherabouts guide, this would have to go with dvd's too, some are brighter then others, same with games.

JCB
yeah man it is a matter of opinion and some things just cant be resolved unfortunaly, but if we wer all the same it would be boring and probally not come up with new ideas.

brightness

I tend to agree...my DIY was plenty bright for DVD's, but not for XBOX. (as if the signal strength was low) I've just recieved a Neoya XBOX to VGA adapter that is supposed to have the best signal path available- will let you know results.

proto

heya proto another thing u could try is getting one of those cheap signal amplifiers, that would make up for any loses i would think, some of these converters loose alot of signal and unfortunatley makes things dim in our case so maybe this idea could work to get the max out of our projectors as in the way of the source brightness.

X1 Screenshot

Ok Guys, here it is. I'll let you decide which is the X1. Pay close attention to clarity and the shadow details. I'm sending them as 2 separate posts.
