DIY vs. INFOCUS X1 DLP

Guys-
I took the plunge.....today I ordered an X1 SVGA DLP projector from 1shopdirect.com for $940 with free shipping.

You may remember the good results I've posted in the past (Harry Potter shots) from my DIY setup. But I cant stand the big freakin box sitting in FRONT of my seating position!!! Since no one has solved the short throw distance problem and the X1 is getting so cheap- the temptation was too much to stand!!!!!

I will post results after it arrives to compare to my DIY setup.

It isn't costing that much more BTW....my DIY setup is:

NEC 1545V $300
Elmo Solar Deluxe OHP w/575 w MH- $200
9A62 component to VGA adapter-$129
New bulb for projector- $85
cables- $40
So far $754, and this doesn't include the MANY hours of design and build work. (say at least $200 worth of my time.....)
That would get it to $954.
It was fun, but is it worth it?
And I still have the big ugly hot box syndrome............

If i were to pay 1,000$ for a commercial prj i'd make sure its at LEAST XGA oh well to each their own....any ways since ur buying a new setup ur gonna have to get rid of that behemoth you call a projector.......so i'll help u out by buying ur NEC 🙂
i'd LOVE to have a big projector in my room 😀

are u gonna sell ur seup? if so how much

goodluck

X1 vs DIY

Negative:

Honestly, the XGA is overkill for most people......Geez, I have a 14 foot diag picture with my DIY XGA setup! I only want about a 7-8 foot diagonal image...and the DLP is supposed to have less "screen door" than an LCD, so we'll see if the SVGA is as nice. I already know I'll have way better blacks, brightness, and C.R. Also less heat, noise and the X1 is like freakin micro compared to "the Hog" I'm using now.

If I like the X1, you got first dibs on the 1545. I also have the Elmo SD with 5 new bulbs!!!! and the Audio Authority component-VGA adapter......

i dont know about most ppl but i only use SXGA on my current setup, but if your a movies man only then you dont need XGA or higher, im a gamer thats why i want XGA at least.

I have no doubts that your X1 will be better than your current and most OHP/panel setups out there 🙂 i think your going to be VERY happy with it...untill the bulb runs out 😉

thanks for the dibs, i'd liek to know the range your looking for, i want to if i can afford it 1st, if you do not want to disclose it here then feel free to email me your asking price.Im only interested in the NEC i already have an OHP(with HQI😎)

oh and about the screen door thing, my 1st setup was with Qa-1200 i never noticed any screen door

Different Thought.

I think this could be compared in parallel to making own PC and buying Dell PC. Dell makes pcs so cheap that building ones own is no more useful but still over clockers and those who just get kick out of it do make their own.

LCDs are going to be bigger not better at same size except in Japan where small is equally good. Once you have zeroed on to one setup it is easy to replicate and improve upon.

I have been playing with PCS now from last 11 years my first one assembled in India in 1992.

I was so very close to financing an X1....but have decided that I need to pay off my laptop and digital camera first! Once im done with that (should be a few months) ill consider the X1.

Im poor right now, so Im taking the DIY route! 😎

This forum has showed me the way. I have been running each and every computer I own on (1024 x 768), 17" 19" 21". I will not pay for a 24" So I decided to partake on a diy projector, ~100" was too tempting. I got my lcd, fresnel, lens, light and power source, and all the free time in the next couple days to make the box and it work. Ill be back with my results. The X1 was tempting but I could not pony up all that "dough" at once!

Comparsion DIY vs. Liesegang Projector

Hi..
i've compared my Diy-projector (see homepage) with an Liesegang (actual price 2000$) at school. I noticed that the DIY makes a colorfuller picture than the Liesegang. I've both tested at 640x480x32 and with the film phone boot.
The Liesegang non DLP makes more noticeable "pixel-spacers" than my panel. But the light is a little bit better than the DIY 🙂.
All in one fully compariable with an expensive commercial projector...

I think we are taking it wrong. We started with DIY idea to have something less expensive than prfessional PJ but now it is more like having a setup which is evolutionary in nature with progressin digital technology. You can beat Professional PJ setup if:

1. We have very nice and economical light source. Lamp, Fresnel and then Lenses to collect the light and throw it.

2. LCDs are going to get cheap every day. Next year at same time you will have 17 Inch LCD with 1280X1024 with very good contrast at 250 dollars.

You can run your DIY setup whole day, with your life history and all the junk you want. Your lamp tanks in professional PJ I will guarantee you there will be no other place than Ebay to buy the lamp.

I think those who are leaving the bandwagon due to economic reasons are right in their own way and those who are sticking on are right in their own way. I will stick on though every day it is more frustrating.

What are ya smokin boy? I just got done building a computer for 666 dollars (scaary) for somebody, and I configured the same thing on dell's website and it ran to almost 2,000. I also just built my newest rig about 3 months ago, and it was faaar less costly than any prebuilt (even barebone type setup) rig.

yeah dave what are u on? lol cheap pre made pc = 12months of life and full of problems, face it the reason pre made pc's are cheap now is cos well just open one up, look at the mobo for starters, its **** made in korea crap that is worth like $60 lol ive been making comps up for years too and never have i had any problem, the last pc cost me about 600 too and i got all the best fruit with no troubles, u do get what u pay for and in somthing like a dell u pay way over for what its realy worth, custom u pay reality prices and quality not to metion a custom pc is built for your needs and quality, a prebuilt pc is mainly built for word processing even with a high powerd vid card the mobo dies in the *** and they are way less upgradable, they didnt call the aptiva craptiva for no reason u know lol

Some alienware PCs are good quality, and they only want your first born child for a bottom line system. The only real choice for a gaming system is building your own. Pre-built ones are either too expensie or too crappy for gaming. However, some online shops will have great deals on assembled PCs(less than piece by piece, same components).

However, going out to Sam's Club and buying a 2500+ eMachine for $499 is great if you only want it for work, because if something goes wrong(something gets fried, broken, etc.) you have someone to complain at. I have a relative that got an eMachine just to use for work, internet, and a little light gaming. The machine has performed flawlessly, and tech support has been nothing short of excellent. They're pretty much just standard generic machines now, no more proprietary stuff like preious eMachines.

...hmmm.....is that ACE i see:bigeyes: come back for more huh? lol

i agree with you guys building your own pc is the BOMB! 😉
kinda like this DIY thing...if feels GREAT to know you can do what millions of americans pay thousands for...lol
when i tell em i build my own Pc they say "OMG!!! you must be a genuis..." wll thats what my mom sez...lol

I paid 312$ for my system like 3-4 mos ago:
9500-9800P Saphire card
512 DDR 2700 Kingston
Abit Kd7 (FAST LANE!!)
and more....

I've been spending a lot of time at AVS and the general concensus there is that the X1 looks like trash. It has a 2x color wheel that gives it a nasty rainbow effect. I haven't seen it, so I can't judge, but it's not a very good PJ from what I hear. Whoever thinks XGA is overkill is nuts. As long as there's a screen door effect, there is no high enough resolution.
