I kinda figured you'd ask about this. Notice the last image there, of the street and car and whatnot? light looks pretty even throughout the whole image, right? (other than the fact that there is dark buildings on the top right and left -- doh! The Crazy Taxi 2 title screen actually *has* darker corners, and I didnt even think about it as I was taking pics, it was just a screen that I chose as a guage of how well the projector was doing, because it was bright, clear, easy to see, etc. Also, my 35mm camera made the whole thing look too dark, and my digital made it look too bright. I need a decent camera :0

I am at the moment extremely jeolous of your projector (and you screen) 🙂
You are definately an inspiration for me to continue on this project. Great work.

Great screen shot, good contrast, clear image, I wonder what is your setup?
It will be perfect if you can take a picture behind your projector, so we can see all your setup and know how big your projected image.
I am working on getting my digital camera running. Once it works, I will post some really high quality pics of my entire setup, so you can see what it looks like. That picture was filling my 60" screen, so, its a decent size. unfortunately, my room isnt that big, so i can only back up so far 🙂
Higher output MH bulb vs. reflector
undream,
Given the added output of your new bulb, how much more do you think you'll be working on reflector optimization? If not too soon, I'd say that should tell everyone just how bright the picture already is!

you guys made me all worried about my Infocus 7600ws projection panel. some fool said that it won't support animations and stuffi am going to call Infocus tommorow, since they are closed today, and find out for my self..

The new bulb will be about 15% brighter. However, I am still going to build a reflector, don't get me wrong. My projector is fine in the dark, but, I still need it to be bright enough for daytime viewing. putting a flat piece of aluminum behind the bulb made for about a 20% brighter end projection. I'm just assuming that once I have a reflector behind all of the bulb (I'm going to build a rectangular style, like the halogen worklights), it will get much, much brighter. All in all, I'm already happy with what I have, and can't wait to finish the reflector. I'm headed out to Lowes right now to look at possible paneling sheets for the casing of the projector, and also I need some aluminum sheetmetal.
Re: 🙁
um, can't you just hook it up? you can put a normal light behind it just to watch it like a monitor....

The person you speak of is not a "fool", he is telling the truth. Sure it can handle animation, but the screen will blur as it is not TFT. It is cheaper and higher-resoloution because it is a twisted nematic screen (STN).

Cya,
For those interested, here is my cost tally for the final product. (not including all stupid mistakes, failures, and other miscellaneous costs like buying tools I didnt have). theres a few unneccessary descriptions, but, I wrote it for my website, of which has an audience base that is less informed 😉
projector components:
Piece of 12" x 18" aluminum sheetmetal,lowes: $12.86
Mothers Aluminum/Mag Polish,walmart: $2.95
400W ballast, bulb, capacitor, affordablelighting.com: $90
Piece of 12" x 10" glass, Lowes: $1.96
sandpaper to make it not slice you up while you're working with it,lowes: $2.00
Dual-Fresnel lens from an overhead projector: about $15. but they are hard to find. Some people are buying overhead projectors to rip out the parts, and if you have to do that it could be expensive. Staples sells these things they label as "Page magnifiers" that are good fresnels, I've already picked up one, and in an effort to make this thing fully reproducible, I might go pick up another and adhere them together, making for a staples do-it-yourself dual-fresnel solution for $10.50. I got my dual-fresnel free because I got an old LCD overhead projector free. This is kinda up in the air still. I'll label cost as $15.00 for now.
Sharp QA-1750 16.7mil 640x480 30ms response LCD Panel: $125. I got a pretty good deal. E-bay is a bitch, and for soemthing you need you'll pay about $150. Check local papers for government auctions, school auctions, and business auctions. They almost always have projection panel LCD panels. You're looking for a 16.7 million color, at least 640x480, with a good response time. Go to an auction informed about models you would buy. There are many XGA models out there too, but go for $200-300 on E-bay. Someday, I may decide to upgrade to one. I'm just going to list $125 as cost of this though.
5 7/8" Plano-Convex lens: from www.surplusshack.com , its $13.50+s&h, so we'll say $18.
Three Vantec 92mm 12v stealth fans, ultra quiet, with three chrome grills (must keep up appearances): $37 This is not necessary to spend so much. I wanted something cool though, so, i splurged. I think the built in fan on my LCD panel is louder than all three of these fans running simultaneously! If you've got computer case fans lying all over the place, then use them, and this won't be a cost. If you have no fans, and need to buy new ones, you can pickup 80mm fans for $5 or less at a local computer supply store. We'll call this cost $20.
91 3/4" diagonal 16:9 movie screen with black trim, chrome wall mounts: $60.00 (optional, a white wall will work fine)
That puts my totals to..
$12.86
$2.95
$90.00
$1.96
$2.00
$15.00
$125.00
$18.00
$20.00
$60.00 (optional)
-----------------
$364.77 including screen/expensive fans.
$347.77 including screen/cheap fans
$287.77 projector only, using cheap fans
Things I still have to buy to complete:
I'm still going to need another piece of aluminum sheet metal. it won't have to be as big though, but, I'll still say cost will be about $10.00
I'm going to pickup another pane of 12" x 10" glass: $1.96
I need a 12vdc power supply for the fans. I'm not going to say this costs anything, since, most people have an old computer power supply, or can get one from some computer nerd they know. Needs to be an AT-style, with a switch on it so you can turn it off and on.
I need some kind of material to build the box out of. Along with that will come many screws, staples, nails, trimboard, etc, that I'll have to purchase. I'm thinking about a 4'x8' piece of paneling or something similar to that, and cutting it all down to pieces to build everything. Not as heavy as wood, easy to work with. I'm going to over-estimate the cost of materials to be $30.00.
cost to go:
10.00
1.96
30.00
------
$41.96
Total cost of project, including screen, optional fans:
$406.73 with screen, using expensive fans
$389.73 with screen, using cheap fans
$329.73 using cheap fans and a white wall

Cya,
yeah that's it... it'll blur alot... it's best suited for still images in that case, right? how bad is the blur usually? curious...
i'm hoping the sharp qa-1650 i got will be alright... seems good...
@Gunawan W
I'm using the "experimenters Achromat" from surplusshed.com
It was the largest one so I decided to go for that one, hoping it would allow the most light through (not having the luxury of a 400W MH sure makes this project harder, at least I know I'll have and awesome picture onceI sell off this light and and get a 400W) I also got the second largest achromat, the "50mm MTD Finder Achromat". The focal length of that one was just too short for my setup. I hope this helps although I'm not sure how bad you aberrations are. I mean, I simply don't have noticeable chromatic aberrations. Perhaps you're just seeing the RGB parts of each LCD pixel.
Screenshots will take a while since I don't have a camera and am too poor right now to incur such an expense. yes, even the disposable ones. I'm going to have to wait until the next semester starts before I can borrow a camera from someone.
@Undream
Spherical aberrations didn't keep me from seeing the pixels. It's just that the aberrations cause a ghosting from one pixel to the next one. From working with a lower light source, I've notice some things. It's weird how the human eyes work but the aberrations are less noticeable if the contrast is set lower than how I wanted it; they were also less noticeable if I shone more light through it. And they were also less noticeable if I had it projecting to a smaller area. If you could, could you try projecting an 8' wide image and also check if you get more pincushioning?

Hi guys,
I found interesting setup for LCD panel, it's from i-glasses, I think this is something like opaque projector setup, I don't know. What interest me of this setup is: the lamp (led) location is at front of the panel. Somebody can explain more detail about this setup?

Hi, I've read this whole thread a few times now. So far, I have purchased a Proxima Model A482SC LCD Panel, and an apollo bigshot overhead projector. The projector uses a DYS bulb.
I am looking to build an energy efficient system with long life bulbs. I plan on replacing the 120v fan in the projector with a high CFM server fan. Right now I am in the process of shopping for a light source. Is the LOA out of the question? Any suggestions?
Edit: I am not looking anything elaborate such as visible in daylight or large distances.. I'd be happy with 50 inches.
thanks

Thank you all for telling me that i have purchased a piece of s*%t. i have asked you all if Infocus 7600ws was a good panel and every one of you said that it will work fine. I bid on it, and now all of a sudden, you tell me it won't support animation. GRRRR..... thank you all...thank you. now all my intentions of building a projector are ruined, and so are my intentions of visiting this forum again!!!

nothing special, note the lumens though... 60,000 for a 175watt bulb?

hmm nice image.. it's very crisp... missing a bit of light, but for the most part, that's a clear picture.
cool!
( i should have a few people confused now... looking for an image that even i don't see.... hehehe )

Actually someone had mentionned in a post after yours that the passive matrix screen might not be very good for this project.
No biggie though... just sell it back on ebay and continue on your quest.
I was wondering why the price as so low for one of those panels on ebay. I guess it's cause it uses a passive screen instead of active.

The hard to find 400 W Compact Metal Halide light...
We're getting close, I know it. To this point, there seems to be general concensus on lighting: I've heard enough about the "Compact Metal Halide" Light to think it's what I need. 400W seems to be in the right range.
But I cannot source one. If anyone has actually got a part #, supplier, etc, I'd be grateful for the info.
Thanks,
dave.
