DIY speakers mainly for heavy metal

Thanks Wolf!

Definitely a few I added to the Spotify playlist. When is their HiFi service active? It's good knowing the good recordings as it can get fatiguing looking for them haha.

In regards to the OP... Assuming ones using a sufficient 18", I am curious what 12" would be a worthy candidate for a similar layout speaker? I have some drivers on backorder and am looking to maybe throw something between an 18" JBL 2245 and a Celestion CDX1-1745 (DE250 ish driver) on a B52 "clone" of the QSC. Any suggestions? JBL2206, Faital 12PR320 and others have crossed my mind, but deciding is tough 😛

The 1" will get upgraded in time as well, so don't let it's cheapness lead you to believing I am looking for a cheapo 12.

Two way plus subs won't come in cheaper than Titans, hm?
The magic is in the midrange. If two ways I would go for 8" or 10" and run stereo subs higher. Maybe buy Yamaha CBRs and only DIY the subs.. simpler alternative to full DIY.
Also, you won't need much power or an exotic amp. Do you already have an amp? 100W will rock hard with such a capable speaker. Maybe try a Crown XLS if you need a new amp.

Well I did not expect to come back to so many new comments, thank you everyone! First in reference to what hollowboy was suggesting and the room in general. At this time there is no plans on finishing the basement any further as we don't plan on staying here more than a couple years longer.

I had wanted to go with a good 2.0 setup at this point and not have to worry about dedicated subs for a few reasons. Complexity and lack of equipment to dial everything in correctly. Clean look - while I don't mind building small fridge sized speakers I would like to do them up right and make them look nice. Cost for proper amplification, unless things have changed or I just didn't learn another way, big subs require big power. Alas subs are also an "easy" addition if I feel the 2.0 system is lacking in the very low frequencies but I would like to do what I can to stay 2.0 for a mainly music listening setup.

There definitely seems to be quite a bit of debate on the need for 3-way and a dedicated midrange in these large PA type speakers, or at least it seems. That Maximus is another beast of a speaker that I gotta imagine really kicks some ***. I'm a bit afraid these really large (Maximus & Titan) might be just a bit more than I'm looking for in size and cost for a first DIY build, especially given the unknown long term outlook (if they will have a home where I move). I can get away with rather large speakers in my unfinished basement now, but in now way would the other half ever allow them in any finished area...but the Asathor or something that size may fit in a secondary finished space. In the end the speakers aren't going to be used for any serious PA type things...they are just for my and acquaintances listening pleasure.

While buying speakers such as those celestions would definitely be easier, I'd never forgive myself for not leaving some blood behind and swearing at the project over and over again! I know the prevailing wisdom isn't to start off designing a speaker for your first project but really seems like a mix between the Asathor & Maximus would possibly tick all the boxes...say 15" to keep box manageable with a 8-10" mid and a horn. Without having the experience or knowledge I have no idea if throwing in a mid really adds to the package or not or is just more headache then its worth.

Just some thoughts, hopefully can settle on a design soon and get things ordered, I wanna build! Also there is a couple songs I don't think i've heard before will have to check them out.

Pi speakers also makes some PA type kits as wel as finished speakers. I built a set of 3pi with the upgraded drivers and crossover a few years back and they are well balanced, not needing eq as many PA builds do to tame the high end. Worth a look if you want to DIY. There is a forum on audio round table with lots of help available from the designer as well as other builders.

Another awesome find there markbakk and I aagree with zman where do you find all these! Unfortunately after reading through the word salad that is google translate and doing a quick search of the needed drivers I think currently that would be a hard build here in the states. Definitely an interesting one, would love to hear a pair or at minimum read a listening write up. Would help if I read German!

Those 4pi I've also been eyeballing. Decisions decisions...think I'm still leaning towards the Asathors due to simplicity and price to get my first build under my belt.

You won't be disappointed with the Asathor I don't think. Especially if parts aren't expensive. Getting LaVoce in Canada is tricky and costs.

When I first saw the Asathor, I had wished I didn't hoard parts as I'd be enjoying them and less likely to struggle finding space for unfulfilled dreams.

I'm not familiar with "heavy metal" music but would assume its dynamic range not the highest (?) as pretty loud to begin with - have heard such type once live at my house with cookie monster vocals and double kick drum (drummer did not have top quality kick - plus no front heads)

Drums played with brushes allow good dynamics such as with Muddy Waters "Sings Big Bill"

maybe an 18" driver Karlson type module about 2ft tall sitting under my slummin' midK/tube mess - ? use at least 300W @8 ohm per channel
