Hey guys,
I’m new with diy speaker build. Hopefully I can get more knowledge from experts here
So I’m planning to build a 3 way speaker ATC SCM50
Mainly use for mastering studio / listening
I already have THIEL TM3 1” tweeter (titanium dome?) it’s made by SEAS
Now I’m planing to buy
Mid - Satori MD60N-6ohm 2.5”
Low - Satori WO24P-8ohm 9.5”
Are these good combination ?
Now for the crossover, from what I found, Active is cleaner and more phase allign ? Any good recommendation to start for Active ?
Thanks

I would take the measurements from the seas h1212 as a guide.

Madisound shop sells them as a Thiel repacement

Hi, just some opinions and thoughts:
But for a "main monitor" the driver selection appears to me really underdimensioned.
These may be a very nice passive speaker for that kind of application, very close to ATC speakers and already seriously developed: https://www.diyaudio.com/community/threads/open-source-monkey-box.327594/
If someone would ask me to develop a classic 3-way monkey coffin with low distortion and really high dynamic headroom for "main monitor" application I personally would choose
Best Regards
Peter
- Seas 1" metal domes are serious and very nice drivers!
- Never heard or used the MD60N, as I think they are somehow misconcepted. Quite large dome diameter, but excessive distortion <1kHz according to pubished measurements, so they cannot be used much lower, only as filler drivers. Therefore it has a very large flange diameter that prevents tighter driver spacing. I don't like them, SB Acoustics has left quite some opportunities behind with these drivers, I think.
- I have used WO24P-4 myself in a classic three way as well as other SB drivers. They all have a bit weakness in the fundamentals, give them at least a bucking magnet to strenghten the magnetic circuit, then they can play pretty nice.
- Active gives you many advantages and flexibility, I use very satisfied some Hypex plate amps with DSP.

- Faital 12RS430
- Faital 5M8N-80 (so that mid gets f*****g loud)
- Sica LP 90.28/N92TW
- Hypex Fusion FA503

No need to reinvent things: https://www.aos-lautsprecher.de/lautsprecherkits/monitor/cm38/So I’m planning to build a 3 way speaker ATC SCM50
Cloning the ATCs requires a large dome midrange in a waveguide!
ATC quotes the diameter of the cone/dome, not the chassis diameter.
the SCM50 is a 3 way with the ATC mid-dome, a 1” soft dome tweeter and despite the 234mm/9” woofer spec, that is the diameter of the woofer cone.
The Satori WO24P is a smaller woofer than that used in the SCM50.
So Unless you can get the original ATC woofer, if you are looking for a close replacement,
a minimum of a ‘10” woofer’ is required to meet the 234mm emissive diameter.
@mbrennwa
What about the OSMC?

Of course! I just don't want to be the one advertising "my baby" all the time 🙂@mbrennwa

But yeah, I would consider the OSMC as a super-duper fit to what the OP is looking for.
Thanks guys for your reply.
However it’s hard to source those speaker driver here in my Country. That’s why I’m leaning towards SB hahaa.
Is the SB combination decent enough for HIFI 3 way ?
Certainly I’ll have a look at the OSMC

The ATC speakers were the inspiration for my build. WO24P-4 in repurposed Akai SW125 cabinets approx 40Litres Sealed, Morel EM1308 mid dome (39uF protection cap) and Morel ET448 tweeter (12uF protection cap). These are run from a Minidsp Nanodigi with 4xKhada Toneboard dacs and powered by an Rotel RMB1066 6 channel amp and have managed to get a fairly flat response on axis with decent phase coherence. To my uneducated ears they sound good and after several different crossovers I found that getting phase coherence was the key to a large sound stage.
I listen mainly to Metal music and the sealed woofer suits that very well as there is not much very deep bass (sub 40hz) but does need a woofer and alignment that can start and stop the cone quickly. 40Litres with the WO24P-4 give a Q of around 0.7 and I have filled fairly well. As said the WO24P are more alike a large 8” woofer with an SD of 255sq.cm but have a 9.5” outer diameter.
I will eventually rebuild the cabinets more substantially and may modify the mid/tweeter position, may even look at a bass bin for the WO24P plus an open baffle mid/tweeter stand on top so I can play with physical alignment.

@MilkMonster You can't just put a few parts on the table and ask if they are good for 3 way speaker. A good speaker is much more than just three nice drivers. Take a look at the OSMC thread and you'll get the vibe.
@MilkMonster I think you need to stop and plan fully. Your first post suggests you might not understand how difficult this process is. If you want a speaker as a trust-worthy tool for studio work you probably should not build your own unless you really know this topic deeply.
There are very good budget priced studio monitors that would work well with a subwoofer for more output. Such as Kali or Swissonic.
Look at this smooth and accurate response data - https://www.erinsaudiocorner.com/loudspeakers/thomann_swissonic_a306/
