no progress here, just got my projector back after being borrowed for wifes business last month, now it's back I might have time to do some projection masks, other than that it's workin as is. But I might have to paint it, being still raw mdf, and prone to going soft/sag/swelling etc without a coat of something.
As many know, I have an SVGA projector, so in order to take advantage of the full panel, I have been trying to figure out a way to make the stretch work. I finally got it to work (with some slight problems), but I am generally pleased with the results. Although a bit cumberson, it requires two anamorphic lenses, one that squeezes the image (panamorph) and the other that expands (DIY). The results are as follows: (Ignore the color issues, I was screwing around with the settings, so colors look a bit washed out; also, there is some vignetting problems, due to the aperture on the back of the DIY anamorphic lens that I can fix):

WOW someone needs to send that image to Shawn Kelly 😀
That is pretty cool, combining both types to make it work. What does the image look like without the lenses in place?

Looking at it again, the images really looks terrible through my camera. I took the shots without a tripod, so that may be why it looks a little blurry--the real screen looked pretty sharp.
Also, as I posted in the original, I was messing around with some settings, and when I took these shots, I had the colors and gamma setting all out of whack, so the image looks completely washed out. I have since gone back and corrected these issues, so perhaps I will try to go back and take some better shots tonight after I get home from work.
I am getting some reflections--so far only noticeable on the text scroll at the opening of Star Wars. But overall, as is usual, these shots are simply "proof of concept". I would really love to see what the prisms with AR coating does...
Perhaps I should file my patent application on "double anamorphic lens" today!

Steve, what are the prisms in the Panamorph made from - glass or plastic and are they solid or liquid filled?
Mark
Mark
So it is the older model 🙂
I have seen this model in action, and have my opinions, what do you think compared to the solid glass prisms?

new to anamorphic
Have been doing some anamorphic lens looking for the past month or so and finally got around to reading this entire thread. You guys have done some amazing work and I just wanted to pop in and say thanks for making this information so readily available. Just ordered a couple of J25's from Suzanne at Massilon for my ax100 and am quite excited. Fantastic company to deal with by the way - called at 215P and she's going to have them shipped out today. Exciting! I'll post more as I get pics of my rig setup. Thanks again for all the work you all have done!

Hi Lindahl,
Not retired, just put it on the back burner. To get any real benefit from a 4 prisms lens, you need to have two things -
1. the prisms pairs bonded so that there is no air/surface interfacing between the prisms and
2. have each of the prisms in the pair made from materials with different refractive indices.
I have BK7 as well as a supplier with the other type of optic glass, but need to purchase a minimum amount to actually do this...

well I had a spare hour today, so I pulled the lense's off, and gave it a paint job with a can of gloss black (all I had), and lined the vertical walls with left over felt from the screen masking, and removed the stickers off the ends of the prism's, and cleaned the prisms (never been done, even had finger prints from when I installed it yonks ago 🙂 )
Gotta get some blackout curtains next, but I'm a bit too tight on disposable ca$h atm.
End result, no reflections that I can see 🙂

Just got my pair of J25's in and made a quick and dirty setup with some cardboard boxes to get everything to a good testing height - these are incredible! I've got no tape, no nothing, just prisms in front of the projector and its darn near perfect. There's some slight (1/8") CA that only appears on the extreme left side of the screen. From where I normally sit (13' from a 118" wide 2.37:1 screen) I have to pause and look for it to see it. And sometimes it just aint there. Havent noticed any reflections but havent watch a huge variety of things yet. Anyways it off to my scrap wood shelf to see what kind of MDF I have sitting around so I can start making a box and mount for all of this. Anyways thanks again for making all of this info so readily available guys! I'll post some pics up when things get a little closer to done.
Hi Jda,
When your prisms are properly aligned, you will have CA on both sides not just one...

yeah I just got done aligning it again with some test patterns and there is definitely CA on both sides now but nothing I cant live with. Its really not even noticeable during an actual movie to me at least. I need to do some more testing tonight when its darker though - Havent gotten around to blacking out all my windows so its pretty light in here now.
Ok NOW i'm going to go see if I cant start on fashioning up a mount for all this (got distracted earlier) - do you guys see any problems with mounting the lens, a sliding sled and the projector to a board and then mounting that board to a projector mount if I'm under the weight limit of the mount? The lens will have vertical tilt abilities and slide in and out from the side. I'm looking at one of the peerless ceiling mounts - rated for 50 or so lbs so I should be ok. Looks like my total will be 25-30 lbs depending on hardware and the amount of wood I use.

If you are within the recommended weight limits and you centre the load, you should be fine. Take the anamorphic lens movement into account as well...
Watch the Matrix films (construct scenes) to test for CA or pull Pb (blue) and Pr (red) of the component feed...

Ahh thanks for the tips on checking for CA. I'll break out the matrix tonight and see what I can see. Still just floored by the image put out by two "trophies"
Yeah I should be well within weight limits and I'll keep the load centered. Or as centered as possible since the lens is going to move (i'll have to do some thinking on that one). I was wondering more so if there would be problems with alignment anyone could think of since the projector and lens would be mounted to the same plane. Looks like as long as the lens can tilt vertically I should be good. Thanks for the help guys!
