Devialet Phantom?

4500 watts is 37.5 Amps at 120 V,
Suppose the switching power supply is 95 % efficient and the Class D 98%.
this means it takes a 40.2 X (electric code 80%) = 50.25 Amp breaker with properly gauged wires to power the amplifier.
50.25 amp breaker awesome, never seen that even in the home industry.
I would like to offer my service to devialet owners to install a dedicated electrical entrance and circuit for their devialet!
Breakers have a continuous current rating. Even a 20 Amp breaker can carry 200 amps for a good fraction of a second. Old fashion filament light bulbs draw over ten times their nominal current when they first turn on.

But 4500 Watts into 8 Ohms is 189 Volts and that's RMS volts not peak volts.

Just what sort of advantage can the company expect by advertising that a small domestic speaker can handle 4,500 watts, perhaps something got lost in translation? Or, a French watt is different and requires a couple of extra zeros?

Well, thirty years ago, we had the subjective watt for some 25 W amplifiers able to make drivers to deliver as much (subjective) sound level as 100 W amplifiers.

Marketing claims of Devialet are very criticised here, however, the manufacturing process is said to be interesting.

Hi all,

I've a pair of Silver with the DIALOG wireless interface, since 18 months and I already made some comparisons and measurements with a calibrated mike. My reference is since 25 years, a pair of 1032A Genelec monitors (still on the market today) + a pair of 1094A subs. I've tried several DACs, some very up to date like sabre DSD and FPGA based devices.

To be honest there are some subtle differences between the two systems, but there is very little difference in audio quality. I'm really amazed by measurements and listening ! Moreover the positioning in the room is less sensitive with the Phantoms. For sure, it still remains a great difference between the 2 systems... their price ! The phantoms include the dual Wi-Fi system, the DAC, the preamp, the amps and the speakers ! I payed more than double the price for my Genelec based system...

As I stated elsewhere, active monitors are easier to setup than separated audio equipment, since the optimization was already done by the manufacturer. You don't have to fight against tangled links full of dust or tweak audio levels and so on : in other words, no headaches. You just have to correctly place the monitors in the listening room following the guidelines of the manufacturer. All professionals in audio industry are using such monitors for their productions and mastering. These are the reasons I preferred the "active balanced way" since more than a quarter of a century.

With the Phantoms, you begin a step after : you even not need a link from the software audio player and/or the computer itself !... You have nothing to tweak, all will be fine often since the first try ! Their apps work on all platforms : computers, smartphones and tablets and they are regularly improved (for example all web radios are available now...).

I haven't listen to the new model, the Gold, but I suppose that they still improved the product. I really think this is the true way for future audio systems.

A global vision of an audio system is the best approach by far IMHO. The future will tell who is "in" and who is "out" in audio industry both for public and professional markets...

My Best.

Thanks 'ondesx' that was a good comparison made by someone who actually has heard them in situ against their own reference system. Just what was needed. Not speculation and criticism from afar based on their own prejudices.

Could you post some measurements that you have taken?

Cheers

Considering the electrical noise level of wireless connections, the jitter from multiple reflected paths, and impedance change from humidity variance, you'd think there would be much more things to tweak than a coaxial cable.
For the past two weeks, and just for fun/experience, I am using a spare Android phone as a WiFi streaming receiver, feeding a preamp stage, feeding a pair of active monitors.
I have done a few tricks to this setup, and the result is seriously hifi.
No problems whatsoever with the WiFi connection, and the real winner is the convenience....load tracks into my laptop Foobar player and off you go, no need to move from my chair.
This is the future of audio, in time to come the stereo rack will look so yesterday.

Hi all,

A question -- the spec says "3000 Watts, 105 dB" which is a bit weird, 105dB isn't that high... What sort of spl are you getting at max volume, and what sort of power does it actually draw if you've measured it (3000W of output implies a fair draw on the AC supply)?

The 105 dB is at 1 m. as usual... The 3 kW doesn't make sense for me. I don't know to what this number refers to. I'll post some measurements asap... Unfortunately I leave for several weeks (holidays finally !...). Stay tuned.

Best

I still hold my 1500 watt as the theorical limit for the amplifier output on a regular 15 A breaker.

There is many loss of powers to take into account from the AC signal to convert to DC then from the amplification stage and from the voice coil inductance and capacitance over the AC output signal to really measure 1500Watts.

and if this is true the amount of heat (95% of speakers energy is converted to heat , not sound) would make the devialet able to heat up a room in winter.

I think they deserve a degree of respect. The product is targeted at the iPod/pad generation who are looking for more and have the money to spend. This is a huge market and Devialet are very smart to have identified the need and developed a product that is well nigh perfect for it. The package appears to be well designed and engineered to me, and I am an industrial designer of some 35 years experience. As for the sound I have only had a limited experience of them, two hours max in less than ideal conditions, but to be honest from the get go I thought they sounded fine. Not the ultimate in terms of quality, I agree with the description of the bass as lacking a smidge in definition, but a very engaging and dynamic sound that has the effect of making music sound good. It's a trick that Canon camera have pulled of for years. It's actually pretty hard to take an unattractive shot with a Cannon camera. A Leica will take a better shot, but for a substantial increase in cost. The Phantoms may not be the most accurate of speakers, but for the target market used to sound bars and iPod docks a revelation. As for the marketing, you have understand the French flair for hyperbola and emotion. Yes it's over the top, but I suspect deliberately so. Implosive/Explosive bass? Who cares about the accuracy of the statement if it intruiged people enough to explore the product. I could live with the Phantoms for casual listening, and really enjoy them. No substitute for rolling your own, but in terms of sound, design and engineering effort deserving of respect.

Hello Steve.
Yes, this is the wonderful new era of easy/ergonomic music (and video) availability/choose-ability, and all controlled from some kind of wireless coupled touch screen device...or PC.

I have recently showroom experienced a number of Wireless or Cat5 connected lifestyle type speakers systems, and for the most of us (the other 99% lol) these systems do work fantastically well and do sound quite close to decent and certainly good enough for the target audience.....and to their neighbors also, very importantly.
No system racks, no speaker cables, just find a spare power point and the particular speaker box joins the wireless local network.....man, what's not to love !!!.

Recently I have been having much fun exploring streaming my PC music player 'now playing' to an old Android phone connected to my A system using SoundWire, which indeed acts as a wireless 'interconnect' from my PC to my HiFi.
For my purposes this is a fantastically wonderful tool.....from my sunroom position I can call up any track/album/performer at will and instantly...whoo hooo bigtime !.
I can also do AB and ABX comparisons from anywhere around the house.....or the front yard/back yard/across the street !.

In my experimenting WiFi audio streaming can indeed sound perfectly good.
