Success!! thanks for your advice, it is really really ugly and I was looking for sparks and to my absolute amazement the pinball dot matrix display that the board drives that y'all helped me fix lit up like a xmas tree when i plugged it in. Most gratifying!!!
Now what do I use to coat some traces that are exposed as they lost lost their green coating.
the removal and replacement of the transistors was difficult. I surmise it was because they didn't have the eyelets like the resistors and diodes did. i severely burned the board where the transistors were mounted because the solder would not melt, both times ,unsoldering and soldering. Next time i will have a desoldering gun.
 
You really need to go out and get some 'e-waste' units to practice on. See how many components you can remove without damage. I don't believe a desoldering gun will be all you think it will be.

Solder ALWAYS melts with the right tools and if you're burning boards your soldering iron is WAY too hot.
