Here I compare three different desktop monitor's upper response range. Each has a different type of tweeter. Same measurement procedure, calibrated mic, REW with 12ms gating, 1/12 smoothing
The width of the tweeter is really important factor! Look at 0¤ and 30¤ diffrence at 5kHz/10kHz/15kHz
Red - Creative T20 - ½" dome tweeter
Green - Tannoy Mercury FR - 1½" dome
Blue - TangBand W3-871 - 3" dome with phase plug (6kHz notch filter)
This is the general picture - there are exceptions to the rule of course!

Another perspective is distortion of bass. Small drivers are in trouble at 80dB/1m below 300Hz.
Sorry, spl levels are not matched.
Now you may find out why I like Tannoy most of all!

OT but in music production speakers placed couple feet away from the desk and using minimal, angled desk avoids the interference from the surface. (and the monitor is behind the plane of the speakers) That is if you absolutely must have stable imaging. Too anal for casual listening.
Havent looked at all the suggestions, but if you can live with the output, a little fullranger using the desk as a 'ground plane' is another solution. Or a mini-halfCBT using the desk as a mirror-surface.
To reduce sensitivity to head movement, use 3 channel playback. You can fit a small speaker under/in front of the monitor without sacrificing ergonomics.

Troels has published a desktop speaker with the tiny 2" Scanspeak FR

Typically no BSC, no xo except a protective 330uF cap. Plain simple.
And this is how it works on a table
