Good news- I FINALLY got a working pair of replacement OP627's & finally have the parts to finish tweaking my dream system
Thanks also to Brannon, who not only sent me two OPA627BP's(to replace two damaged OPA627AP's), but also threw in some NE5532AP's for me to compare!! You're all right, man! 🙂
On another thread I will soon be reporting on three different DVD2900 Mods and doing listening comparisons between them...Stay tuned
Good Listening & Happy New Year!

All the discussion about the clock IC leaves me confused on 1 point: why not have a dedicated clock for the primary audio frequency inserted _after_ the clock IC? What am I missing?
Thanks!
Thanks!
Denon DVD2900's cheap now on eBay!
Just saw a couple Denon DVD2900's on eBay for about $100-

I agree, it's a great deal and when modded these sound great!!

Since the price of used Denon DVD2900's has come down recently(no doubt due to some owners upgrading to Blue-Ray, etc.), now is a good time to snap one up and mod it!

Thanks, JT.
I just picked up a spare for under $100! 😀

p.s. Do insure it for >$200, because that's minimum cost to repair.

The second thing I did was replacing the coupling caps with polypropylenes. There capacitance is now only 6,6uF compared to the original >220uF.
How can you do this? You are taking caps with values of 220 microfarads and replacing them with caps that have only 6.6 microfarads. I am baffled by this. Such a large change. Won't this cause some kind of massive goof-up at some point? How do you know that this is safe?
The DVD2900 has two pairs of front channel outputs. I will connect one pair of outputs past the coupling caps directly trough a resistor to the op-amp. This should work as long as the preamp has coupling caps on the inputs. Anyone tried this?
What??? If your preamp has coupling caps on the inputs, that's fine, but what if your preamp's volume knob comes before those coupling caps? Won't this instantly fry your preamp's volume control?

Denon DVD-2900 Modded
I am trying to information on modding my Denon DVD-2900. I cannot find any instructions and part lists to do this. Can you please share info or tell me a link which lead me to do this.
Thank you

The modding of my 2900 is officially complete.
Tonight, I finished my PS upgrades by removing the .1uf/250V and .22uf/250V x-rated safety caps and replacing them both with .47uf/600V Auricaps (ala "auricap tweak").
On the audio board, I replaced the AD8620 I had placed in IC216 with an AD8066 to match the AD8066's in the output path.
I also replaced the stock output path resistors R312, 313, 314, 315, 318, and 319 with Riken Ohms.
In addition to my "Dutch Mod," these last few items have dramatically improved the sound. More detail, tighter bass, more air around notes, and the blackness is just beautiful. Surprisingly, the redbook playback (the 2900 weakness IMHO) has really improved.
Hi to all,
sorry if I resume this very old thread. I have a DVD2900 and I would like to try some tweaks. Sorry for my newbie question.
For muting transistor. Can I remove only TR231 or I need to remove some other parts for example resistor 47K? I have to remove only the transistor TR231 or even TR232-TR236?
Thank you

I have resolved my problem. I removed only transistors TR231-TR236 in all six channels.
Very good improvement, with this tweak.

Which are the output capacitors?- Removed the output capacitors - 1 piece both channels +/- 3 mv DC / 1 with one channel 50mv* DC. : --> Better soundstage and bass response.
Do I need only remove or replace?
Yes! I'm late to the party, but have modded one of my DVD-2900's!
I bought a couple of these players used several years ago, and just recently got around to modifying one of them. I took a very simplistic approach to the output stage, essentially bypassing it (or at least most of it) through .5uf paper-in-oil capacitors to gold-plated RCAs. Most of the work was done n the power supply, where I followed most everyone's advice by replacing electrolytics around the regulators feeding the audio board, and the bulk of the primary side of the supply.
I spent about $35 in parts, not including the few things that I had on hand. The biggest mistake that I made was not measuring the component spaces on the power supply board - many of the caps that I bought were too wide and I had a real challenge getting them to fit.
It all worked really well, and the player now sounds really wide open with great bass.

Is there still anyone alive out there from the generation that did all these DVD-2900 mods?
I made a comprehensive project on
DENON DVD 2900 😉
I rebuilt the power supply
and the Audio circuit
The device sounds awesome
Sounds better devices that cost thousands of dollars

Let me resurrect this thread again🙂 How bad is the pop after removal of muting transistors? I just bought two of these devices and would like to do some mods. If I wanted to do one mod only, which one would you recommend, with most significant improvement in the sound?

Nice work. Difficult to tell exactly what you modded though just from the photos🙂
I replaced output opamps with OPA2134 in sockets, and simply shorted output caps. There should be no DC at the output, as the power supply for opamp is +-12V. I have another DVD2900 which is not modded, so getting ready for A/B testing🙂
Next will be removal of muting transistors, at least on one stereo output. I am a bit worried about the pops I will encounter though. I have a hot air gun, so removal of SMDs is not a problem.

I am planning to try OPA1656 next, on all positions including I/V, to bring this player to the next level. Has anyone tried it yet?
Muting transistors removed (all 20 of them), output caps shorted, video section(s) disconnected, I/V and buffer op amps replaced with OPA1656. Now we are talking🙂
I was about to install a relay for muting outputs but the the noise is almost non existent, so I am leaving it as is for now. It should be a straight forward mod should a need arises.

I am surprised to see that there is no earth connection to chassis. I literally felt it in my skin. This should be a mod that is done before any other. Might not improve the sound, but might save your life. How could denon have missed this?
