So my crazy idea (that I doubt you'd implement) is to slice off the top of your Betsy, mount it to the back along the new top edge at 90 degrees - pointing backward, where it used to point upward.
Coarsely depicted below - the grey part is the "folded back" slice off the top of your baffle, the black rectangle is the tweeter.
I'm no artist - I couldnt make the curves the top slice would have - but maybe it conveys the idea.

I've mounted them without felt and flange on a section of aluminium angle. Now to do some REW tests, and listening tests.
Thanks for the diagram Joe - now I know exactly what you mean. It's a daring idea..it would get the tweeter as close as possible to the full-range driver....who knows what it would do to the rear reflections. I guess I'd have to suck it and see ;-) . I'm not game to try it at this stage
