Deciding which speakers to build

i may have to buy the Audophon tweets and build them myself

From businessman perspective, you should better use cheap tweeter to cut cost down a lot. Only high end system requires that the tweeter should at least as expensive as the woofer.

But the value of a speaker may increase if the sound quality is also increased. It is very hard to justify use of expensive tweeter/driver unless the designer is up to it. But like I said, you can find such individuals on the net. You don't need to pay for their time and effort to find the solution for the drivers (which may cost a lot).

Jay, I do not have an SPL setup and they are in a 15litre test box, hardly ideal and tuned to 55hz.

I have measured free air impedance, and derived Qts from this, in all the missions Qts is higher than spec, but there a deviation of less than 2% between them. Fs is 48hz vs the spec of 43hz, and Vas i havent had time to measure yet. Qts ~0.45 in my tests.

As for a cheap tweeter, I have 4 visaton FRS5X for the purpose

For manufacturers it is important to realize the benefit of using cheap parts. Even $1 difference is critical when the product is mass-produced. But for us consumer who can build by ourselves (DIYers) such benefit doesn't exist.

It is hard for me for example, to justify the use of chip amps. Because at the end I will always think I can build discrete (in amps, transformer is the expensive part).

For speakers, we have crossover that may be as expensive as the tweeter. At the end we have to calculate the total cost, and value the sound result.

For the small woofer such as the Mission, Fs of 43Hz is impressive. May be there is serious issue around roll-off frequency such that it has to be crossed as low as 2.5KHz in the above example. Your Visaton tweeter(?) is of course can be crossed at this F but I'm not sure how high the tweeter can go. If not high enough, then the system should be compared to a fullrange driver. Imagine the benefit of a fullrange driver: no cost for xover, perfect blend, optimum transient. Certain fullranger (may be from Fostex line) may win in the comparison.

If you like the sound of the woofer, and it can go low enough, why not pair with a better tweeter. But you need the FRD if you want to be able to model various tweeters so you can find the match before you purchase it. Or, look at good example of speakers crossed at around 2K5 and research the tweeter used.

BTW, when you have the drivers/woofers on hand, for me no measurement is better than my own ears. So if it is special, you need to treat it special also (build a special speaker out of it).
