the published graph has a depressed area which would render it a poor driver in certain circumstances - there's a graph on a small baffle which looks ok
what are users of this driver seeing in their response graphs? - would have purchased one or a pair a long time ago but PE's graph was not encouraging.
stumbled onto this: Dayton PS220-8... - Page 3

only saw one graph and I tend to not trust homemade graphs because there are room frequencies that cancel some.
I do plan on buying a pair of these later on this fall.

its Dayton's graph which looks poor for my use. Does PS220 have alleged built in BSC or not? - they're on sale currently.

I asked about why more folks don't use this driver before. With this price there may be good incentive. I recall a fairly nice MLTL was built and tested in another thread. I think it has quite a rising response a Karlsonator may have enough bass gain to make it nice.
here's a comment posted in 2011 on diyaudio regarding PS220 in a K12 size coupler

Freddi, there 's no need to hijack this thread with another Karlson discussion, especially since I still have couple things to do on these cabinets. When I am done, I will most likely present it on gainclone or in separate thread. My intention is to try to modify the rear shelf (maybe even the top chamber) and see if it will help with peaks/dips.
By posting in this thread, I just wanted to let anyone interested in PS220 that they sound pretty good in Karlsons (and in my room). No measurement can describe that sound - the closest would be to say that it sounds like the "loudness" is built into the speaker. The sound just fills the whole room and you can really feel it, regardless of where you stand. Imaging is unbelievable. Bass is strong, punchy and starts hammering somewhere around 60Hz (thanks to cabinets) while the highs are sparkling, due to PS220. Classical music sounds terrific. Again ... there are few audible peaks/dips so if you are looking for a technically perfect speaker, go for MLTL.
When I was breaking in the drivers, I was more gentle then bear. It took about two weeks for me and I started from lower levels, gradually increasing the volume/excursion. I checked them couple times during that and indeed, they do sound much different then they did when I purchased them."

I took a look at it. The sale price is indeed attractive! Then I checked the T/S parameters--with V(as)=2.79 cubic feet, either it gets a big box, or goes on OB. Not sure what size Karlsonator it would need, but I suspect larger than I would like!
Cheers, Jim
Jim,
As it turns out, the Dayton PS-220 is ideally suited for the Karlsonator 8. The box is not too big and the frequency response sim looks very nice indeed.
Here is the Karlsonator 8 plan:
Here is the PS220-8 frequency response:
Here is the cone displacement:
Here is the Impedance:
It looks like a worthwhile build to me if you want to make it out of wood. GregB just had a good outcome with the CHR70 in a wooden 0.53x scale Karlsonator that is about 5 in wide.

Oh, great !
Now I have to figure out if I want to build a pair of these! I have been thinking I would build a pair of scaled Karlsonators for the FF165wk. But the PS220 on sale is a few dollars less than the FF165wk.
And I've only just started cutting wood for the 0.53X dual TC9FD karlsonators!
Meanwhile, at the children's theater where I'm a volunteer sound tech, we're still touring our current production (The Reluctant Dragon). And then there's all that yard work and the home improvement projects... Retirement is wearing me out!
Thanks for the info.

Hi X,
Looking at the freq response curves for the FS220 in the Karlsonator 8 and the FF165wk in the scaled Karlsonator you did for me earlier: I think the of the curve for the FF165wk seems a bit better. Or do I have it wrong?
And then: who knows how the higher freqs will sound? I don't think the models are good at predicting above ~1KHz. (ripping hair out & pounding head on desk)
Thanks, Jim

Jim,
Yes, above 1 kHz is a guess which will sound better. I would use a helper super tweeter if you are really looking for upper end brilliance. The 3.5 in Vifa's are small enough that the highs get past the K aperture well. Look at Jessman's measurements of the BG20 in a K12 and the highs are not making it through. Those drivers are both nice and it is a hard choice. The PS220's look really cool though. 🙂
