Thanks for the replies... I tried every setting available and the spdif would not even light up... As soon as I reverted to the older version spdif worked fine. I can live with ver 15.08 which seems to work fine on the Foxconn . The Zotac is a new palm sized box and works great with the latest version so I will stick with it.... Dave
beta firmware has ssh enable, so you can tweak!

Ok... I downloaded and installed version 17.01 on the Foxconn and the spdif is working fine. I guess it didn't like the 2016 versions. Thanks, Dsve
Dave, which version of the Zotac are you using? I am now in need of a computer-based system that is compact, cheap, and has an SPDIF out. The Foxconns referenced seem to be unavailable.
tubesguy, I have the Zotac Zbox Nano CI323 barebones model. It is a current model and should be available many places. It is about 5x5x2.5 inches, quad core processor, numerous ins and outs including optical spdif. I put in some memory and a drive and it works flawless so far.... Dave

There are lots of alternatives for the Raspberry Pi. It all depends on your requirements and situation. What is your definition of "best"? They all sound the same, but functionality varies.
I agree, the RPi has limitations with the USB implementation, but at audio speeds it doesn't really matter.

If one use 'hat' kind of DAC for RPi maybe it doesn't really matter, but it is better to use USB DAC's with Daphile and 'standard' computer..
Is there any 'hat' type DAC with native DSD..
