Hey. Thanks for reply. I did not - yet. 200hz tone with XO connected normal way?
I would buy new D19TD but they differ in resistance and ferrofluid. I have a hunch that they might sound worse/different/louder.
Funny thing is that DALI 7 is often more pricey than lets say DALI 810, DALI 18MK2 or DALI 850 even.
I haven't heard them but I'm thinking about pulling a trigger on one of them.
I will try 200hz in a normal way from PC / YT.
If there is no rubbing, DC resistance is the same, coil is ok - do you have any idea why this is happening? I don't believe dome can harden or be stiff. Mine are perfect - you can see that they have had grills on them all the time. Woofer foam is like brand new (original).

No XO connected (then you get nothing from the tweeter at 200Hz), feed 200Hz directly to the tweeter you are testing. No problem if you remember to keep level very low and listen with your ear next to the tweeter. Could even be possible to feed it from headphone out on computer.
I have the 810, but it dd not sound good with standard XO, but with active XO it was pretty good. Troels G. did a modified XO for the 800.

I have not compared them side by side, 810 was a year ago or so,even if I still have them, slightly taken apart and no XO.
I don't know the 850, but 350Eur sounds a bit much to me. I payed 50Eur for the 7, and 130Eur for the 810. Both had one tweeter broken.
I used the P17 6,5" from the 810 in some DIY 2-way speakers, and they sound good.
I thought the 7 measured better after the adjustments in the XO, but I still did not like the sound. Bass sounded ok both before and after mods though.

Hi Rallyfinnen, I took XO out of the box. So now I have external XO. Messing with capacitors etc. With good results!
Do you think that adding bracing would help with the cabinets? I think they resonate with strong bass.

Sure, bracing and maybe some bitumen pads. Another easy fix is to glue some floor tiles to the cabinet walls in the places where you have most resonances.
I found this to be a good quick fix, only glue them on the inside and the cabinet will be fairly silent. Take your pick on some glue used in construction.

My left tweeter sounds dull compared to right.
Hi sviru
Maybe a silly question, but how are your speakers placed in the room.
The difference in tweeter sound could be caused by early reflections from one side wall being different from the other. Have you tried to just swap the speakers left to right, to see if it is actually the speaker it self?
The room has quite a lot of impact on the sound, especially in smaller rooms of course.
Also sometimes I find what I think is the tweeter sound is actually high midrange.
Just some thoughts.

BTW, talking about bass, have you played around with the foam behind the woofer? Maybe damping the cabinet the 'normal' way would be worth trying?
I was planning to try this on mine, but they are put to the side for now, as I'm working on other projects. Foam surrounds that seem to fit has arrived though, so I will get back to them when I find the time and inspiration.
Great. I have ordered spare foam from ali. I didn't try. This sponge type is probably not perfect for the task. I think there should be free airflow to the bassreflex. In this case here is not. Ill try to brace it in a few spots without glue for now.
I hope you will proceed with them.

I actually replaced the foam surrounds last night, so there is actually some progress 🙂
Hope you can report your findings on the damping of the cabinet. Can you measure impedance curves? Would be interesting to see impedance plots with different damping setups.

I have actually done a little bit more with these now. I glued some floor tiles to the walls around the woofer, and added felt on top of those. An IKEA-pillow was used for damping the top of the cabinet, and one of the foam pieces from the behind the woofer was put in the bottom. I also used another foam piece, and glued on felt to it, and put that on the wall behind the woofer. Only leftovers are the foam pieces with holes in them, mounted on the magnet from factory.
I would have liked to brace the top part of the cabinet too, between mid and tweeter, but it's impossible to get there without removing the mid enclosure.
The most interesting thing is that I was listening to each driver through the XO again last evening, and especially the mid sounded as awful as before, but just to verify my impression, I connected the mid directly to the amp and ran it full range, and it was suddenly sounding very nice! I have not investigated further, so I have no clue why. I'm thinking dried out caps or something, I have never heard anything like that being caused by caps before.

I added some sticky surround glue to the suspension/VC-joint (front)
I have to add (and admit), this was a mistake.
I studied the impedance plot in the datasheet, and compared to my measurements, and could see the impedance was elevated in a wider range in the data sheet. I suspected the suspension resonance was higher on mine because of the glue. So, after some careful cleaning with ethanol, I was able to remove the glue. The suspension resonance was lowered, and impedance looked very similar to the datasheet.
I have not measured the frequency response yet, but suspect that the low end has been improved to some degree.
I finally wrapped this project up by putting them together without major mods.
My main 'problem' was that the dome mid does not play low enough to properly integrate with the 10" woofer. With the big offset between acoustic centers between the two it was impossible to get good phase tracking with the required XO point, not even mentioning what directivity would look like..
I measured several midranges, and some worked out pretty well, but I think a good mid would also need a better tweeter, and most likely woofer too, so I would end up with a totally new speaker in an old box.. Since this is not the type of speaker I'm interested in building at the moment. So, I just did some minor adjustment on the XO with some padding resistors to give them a slightly falling FR, since that sounded better to my ears. I now use them as garage speakers, but will probably sell them sooner or later. Woofers might need some breaking in with the new surrounds.
