DAC AD1862: Almost THT, I2S input, NOS, R-2R

This tie I asked the main difference between the vivid and the classic and "John" didn't answered to 2 gentle questions, one of them was : what the one the team prefers ? lol ! Maybe this John was the intern marketing student of the month, dunno ?!

You see what you did there?
You asked some else their subjective opinion on a thing that requires your complete objective approach. If he had told you his favourite, would you have chosen this one? then going into the review with a skewed mindset and certain expectations, you might be disappointed because someone else chose it for you... 😉 I guess he just wants reviewer to go in blind, with no idea what to expect.

The classic is used in his own amps I think, if this is any indication.

Personally, I had the impression that the classic was more popular but the 'description' of the Vivid sound was more appealing, I wonder if one is JFET input and the other BJT?

Next time just say yes! - my general approach to life in general 🙂

PS, your V8 link above is nonsense, was this an article on Burson?

Both are jfet. V6 are also jfet. Probably same topology, but they may (most likely) have cascoded jfet Uds differently, classic having higher V Uds with ofc higher current. It makes an impact in the manner they both are described as, as well as sound perceived.

The only phrase that makes sense and honnest description here !

It is a simplified circuitry to stand on a small foot print still as it is discrete ! It is simple to see in good designs that try to approach op amps, that one needs more than a dozen of transistors at minima to try to acheive something, even Marantz in their little cans are bigger and used premium parts like SK170, etc ! I like the packaging of the swiss watch though !

Lovely people - my apologies, bad moment for this superb thread. Having a think and it really is one of the best on the forum, mainly because of the people here. I genuinely feel terrible about this, my head was pounding with a migraine and my forebrain executive functions were dulled somewhat 🙂

Miro's DAC designs are perfect for the non-expert like me, so many of us here are self taught enthusiasts with no ego or status in the game. DAC threads seem to be full of kind people and the product designers like Miro and Abraxilito are top human beings.

Back to the good stuff, got some components to build more boards, I bloody love building these DACs. Had to get a couple of different ones ready with op-amps -PCM1702 / AD1862 / AD1865 / PCM58 will do for now. Will sell the lot when finished.

Love you all.

Something else: I see significant drops in stock for AD1862 at Digikey (a few weeks ago, it went down by 10,000, now again by a few hundreds).
I would like to get some from this only official source. Is there any interest to get some by other EU folks? I could handle the order from Digikey and send for real cost + postage to EU countries.
For a long time I wanted to make an USB powered DAC, maybe it's time 🙂 PM sent

One thing is for sure, this thread popularized the AD1862 more than anything else before.

Consider few facts:
  • there is only 50k of these new chips left, that is only 25k devices based on "new AD1862" for the whole population
  • there is maybe 500 milion households who have enough money to spend on electronics
  • 1% of these households are audiophiles who like to experiment with audio devices, that is 5 milion DACs
  • 1% of audiophiles shows an interest in something more than consumer delta-sigma and visit this thread, you need 50k of AD1862 devices
... one video about AD1862 from a famous youtuber who likes to build electronics can make this even more popular
... 25k devices left - 50k demand = -25k lack 🤣
... but even worse can happen ... a person who has millions on his account and likes to invest in "valuable" electronics things can appear, or person who is producing audio devices, and he buy the entire AD1862 stock ... Someone invests in gold, someone in real estate or stocks and a you can find an expert who invest in obsolete chips
... stock up AD1862 while it is affordable and you haven't done so yet 😉
