Cyrus CD 8x laser problems… maybe

Re. All repaired, but i'm thinking that this has caused the issue with no sound?

Difficult to say without a circuit diagram. Powering the player with the damaged traces may have damaged something.

If you have digital out then use it as a transport or you can buy a cheap DAC off ebay and fit that.

Try contacting Cyrus support for the service manual - they have been very helpful as I have a number of them but not for the player you have.

Can you not test the voltage regulators? I expect them to be 3 pin TO22 devices, 78xx or LM317 devices, they should be able to take a fair amount of heat.

They are cheap enough to replace, cut the legs off, desoldering the remains of the legs should require less heat or solder the new device to the remaining legs, not ideal but it should hold.

BTW I found the Cyrus PCBs to be not the best quality as I ended up removing a couple of copper pads, luckily they were not connected on that side of the board so needed no repairs.
Also use lead based solder when doing this type of work as it works better.

Good luck with contacting Cyrus.

I emailed Cyrus last night, and first thing this morning they replied with service manuals for both the CD8 and CD8x, he even supplied another for an elderly dAD3 I have as well 🙂

I agree about the circuit boards not being the best, a few traces underneath some of the SMD electrolytic caps came off, easily repaired though thankfully.

The CD8 was working fine yesterday, albeit it with a sticky drawer, so I had a go at sorting that today. Well after most of the day tinkering with it, the bloody thing is still the same. Only trouble now is that it only reads and plays discs if the bottom is removed!! The CD8x still has no sound from it still.

The dAD3 has a non functioning front panel, no matter what I do to it. However I added a 3 pin IEC socket and grounded the chassis and whereas before it was hit and miss as to whether it played a disc or not, it now plays faultlessly every time (and the drawer works fine as well)

All in all a day of nothing much being achieved, apart from a sore back from sitting all day tinkering with strange CD players 🤣
