As with all things, the "Law of Diminishing Returns" applies. But, to what degree can one actually hear a difference and "Who will tell the King he has no clothes?"
My Spendors have spent a lifetime being listened too in a room constructed with brick and block. Now however, the room is made of "Stud Walls" - timber frame and plasterboard. There is no question they are going to sound dreadful when played even at modest loudness. Even the single Spendor A5r I bought at three times the cost of the pair of BC1's, with it's internal bracing and tight Bass, is going to make me question why I paid so much for it, despite it being new.
Which leads on to - is there any point in having a Quad 909 to drive it? None really! Perhaps now I can identify with a cartoon I saw in a 1970's Hifi magazine, which portrayed two characters sitting in front of an oscilloscope connected across a pair loudspeakers. One is saying to the other - "Look, you can see how good they are".
