What would be the dissadvantages of making a close together array of small bright halogen bulbs in a 3*3 formation? obviously bulbs like PHILLIPS GE 150 watts are cheap and don't require ballasts as they run on mains power, and run relatively cool too. If they had reflectors built in (like shop display bulbs), the cluster would still be fairly directional... wouldn't it?

I did a calculation one time, and I could get the same use out of a $200 400 watt metal halide setup (bulb + ballast), than I could with $800 worth of halogen bulbs for my ohp.
Anything else I should know?
Hi,
Thanks for your replies... One of the advantages for me is set up cost, as for halogen's I could do the mod for literally $60 USD. In the UK, MH kit like balasts etc costs more, is scarce, and besides which, I'll probably get bored of it in a few months anyway.
So if I took the Halogen route, is the light produced good enough in quality? And how much cooling should I allow? Finally, the bulb life is quoted as being 2500 hours, can I expect that to be correct realistically?
Many Thanks,
Ben

generally speaking, halogens have a yellowish color not great for projection. Also, having them in clusters may cause them be stay warmer than normal which wouls shorten the life.
Light Spectrum
Slightly off topic....
...But is the the visible light spectrum given off by whatever type of bulb we use really that important, given the fact that we can adjust RGB color levels on our screens....espescially to adjust any color defficiencies our bulb might have?
thanks.

Perleman
Maybe this would be useful to you. I assume the ballast is in the base of the case, but then I assume a lot of things!!

Could possibly take out what you need and fit it to your ohp, with a proper reflector etc?

saw the post, I'm working on an array like you suggested.
check out the solux post.
I just got my bulbs, and I'm very impressed.
