Sorry, you have another one to include. It looks very promising.
That does it! The next person to bring out another one of these damn things is in BIG trouble! Sorry, you have another one to include. It looks very promising.
Do they know how much work it is to burn all these amps in and make cases to put them in?

But yes, it does look tempting!

Add this one to your list made by the fellow that makes the Monica DAC for Redwine Audio...
That's one's already on the list! 🙂
Hi Nuuk,
You've been arround these forums long enough, how does T Amp compares to GainClone soundwise?

You want me to leave? 😱
how does T Amp compares to GainClone soundwise?
Well, at first, I didn't think the class-T amps were as good as the GC's but they have won me over and I have to admit that's what I'll be using in future! Now all I have to do is decide which is best! 😉
Anybody want to buy half-a-dozen Gainclones? 😀
Sorry Nook, I've made poor choice of words.
I ment to say "most experienced". English is my adopted language.

Me, given the fact that I'm not convinced yet.. that is, not at all...
And it's difficoult to transform a Tripath into current drive..

Ciao, George
[though I did not change the input caps, yet]
Re: Another new kit to include
Yes, so many kits.
I wonder if anyone has been able to identify the sonic character of the TA2024 vs. the TA2020 and TA2021.
I recall reading somewhere that the TA2024 had more "magic" than one of the other Tripath chips, but I don't recall which one it was compared to or in what context.
Apparently, Yeo at diyparadise listened to all of these Tripath chips and settled on the TA2020 for his Charlize offering.
The AMP3 uses the TA2021B and Audioconstuire offer kits with both the TA2020 and TA2024.
It may be way too early in the game to put a finger on it, but it would be great to identify the sonic characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses of each of these chips.
Looks like Nuuk is taking the first steps in this. Hat off to Nuuk!
Best,
KT

Sorry Nook, I've made poor choice of words.
Please don't worry, I was only making a joke of it and realised what you meant. I am amazed at how well you all speak English when it's not your native language! 😉

That's how I felt for a while but then something changed and I found myself liking the class-T amps very much. It will be interesting to see if you are won over too George.

From the little I have heard so far, 'the sound of chip' is probably masked by the sound of the PSU and possibly some of the external components as well! Rather like trying to distinguish the taste of chicken from different sources in a hot curry! (And I'm a vegetarian! 😱 ).

Nuuk,
Exactly! All the stuff around the chips is now playing a bigger part in what we hear than the chips themselves. Things like input caps, output filter components and power supply configuration would all need to be the same to arrive at any meaningful conclusions. All these pieces/parts would need to be very good or any one of them could mask the chip differences!

Is it the computers or the hi-fi which is the addictive element Roger? Don't answer now, go to bed and sleep on it! (I still haven't worked it out myself!) 😉
COMPUTER!!!!
Actually it is software problems I have been fighting, seems like forever. Most of it now points to Norton products being the cause. Do yourself a favor and don't try to install or run Norton products! I have easily wasted 100 times its worth in my time trying to get everything to work. Finally deleted it and now email works again as does all my office stuff.
But you are right, I do need some sleep!

Symantec Enterprise anti virus stuff is reasonable however in my experience the home stuff i.e. norton anti virus and internet security is woeful. Do your self a favor and for anti virus needs use AVG freeware edition. For the price (nothing, nada, zip etc.) it is excellent.

Just my 2p worth.
I am just finsihing off my rehoused SI and have a Amp3 kit to stick together as well. I love these little amps they are so much fun and the quailty is just superb. I am currently using a SMPS on mine and have just enjoy it so much. I am 100% converted to them myself. I love my gainclone but the trouble is i built those sparing very little expense and yet the out of the box SI given 2 days constant playing via a ipod on loop sounded better.
Well it sounds more detailed doesnt have the bass at the moment but once the input caps are changed i guess that will come, should be done in the next couple of days. The one with the joy which will be building AMP3. I cant believe the size of the cicuit board it about 30% smaller than the SI amp
Any way these class t amps are great fun sound superb and i am totally converted.

I have avoided them for years now! I use Antivir, ZoneAlarm, Adaware, Spyware Blaster and Spybot and all that keeps me 99% free of problems (and costs nothing). 😉
Been using Adware all morning to remove crap from an editing machine here. Must have been usinging it for years, yeah top product.
Nuuk when will you be producing a t-class round up then, sounds excellent. Just a quicky does the amp3 sound much better than a SI? I am currently building a chassis to put a Si in but then order the AMP3 kit in the mean time. Would i be better just sticking the amp3 in this fancy chassis, or should i continue with both projects?

The final review will be some time yet Phil. I am still waiting for a few more samples that will have to be cased, burned in etc. This is a huge job!
I have not yet heard the AMP-3 (due to technical problems - mine not theirs) but hope to soon.
For comparisons of the SI T-AMP and AMP-3, have a look at this forum, I believe a few people here have offered their opinions on that issue.
I would suggest proceeding with both amps and then you will have one to sell when you have decided which one to keep! But that's just me - OBSESSIVE!

Daniel, there is no electrolytic that sounds as good as a polypropylene. Don't worry too much about size, you can always mount them off-board. Or if you use a pre-amp (or source) with no DC offset, you could do away with the DC blockers on the power amp.
There is approximately 2.5Vdc present on the input of the Tripath chip - the input capacitor needs to be there!
Tim.

Thanks Tim, I think that it was Mourip who pointed that out on another thread but it certainly warrants repeating! 😉
Re: Re: Another new kit to include
I agree with that completely, I have both an original SI T-amp, a kit with a ta2020 from Autocostruire and a kit from 41Hz .....
I can't say anything about the latter, I still have it in the envelope ... since two months , due to the SMD components
😉 .
The clear winner among the other two is the kit from Autocostruire. Apart from the bigger power (that's really useful), even the sound is superior, and the air core inductors bring you a very intriguing and natural sound ....
I will probably recycle the SI amp in my car, but the other one is actually stably housed in my listening room....

First Impressions
All:
Sunday night, I ordered one after reading this thread. Got it this morning in NYC, USA.
I've had it running for about an hour.
Compared to my modded T-Amp, it throws a wider and deeper soundstage, has more authorative bass, better dynamics, better detail and lusher mids. Leading edge transients really punch. The initial sibilance at the top has already started to be tamed, which was never the case with stock or modded T-Amps before many hours.
I built it stock, unhoused, but plan on trying a variety of coupling caps and Panny FC's on the rails. It will eventually go into a ParMetal case along with its battery.
I feed it through a Transcendent Sound Grounded Grid and drive Lowther ML TL's. Sources include a CD-Pro2M kit/Nixon DAC (battery powered) and a Teres/Redpoint/Galibier hybrid TT.

Larry Welsh
