Pure fantasy, too much dope 😉
Go back in time and suggest to your curmugeon uncle that the US was going to land on the moon soon.
He would have said the same thing you did. How do the Jordans sound in your cave?
dave
It doesn't help much, but I have two smoke detectors with a bit of it in their ionization chambers.
Thanx. Also worth pointing out the huge use of radiactive materials in medicl imaging (and more).
And Matt wouldn’t have is celphone if we didn’t go to he moon. Or his computer. Or this forum.
Man is, if we are optimistic, just about to evolve out of the gravity wwell we were hatched in.

Not sure how you work that out. It was a long time ago and no one's been back since, why's that?

Medical isotopes are not waste from power plants, though. They are usually made in small nuclear reactors designed specifically for that purpose or for research, and they can also be made with cyclotrons.

Once we get established in space it wil help bring huge wealth to everyone.

hmmmm, maybe it’ll never be “everyone”, the whole point of a market economy is to give people the opportunity to get one up over everyone else. Space is already starting to go private.
I was berated on the Black Hole thread for even daring to ask what the point was of the Mars missions. 🙂
Add my name to that list. Robotics and that super cool helicopter are one thing, but colonizing and or terra-forming any extra terrestrial body - other than maybe the moon? - strike me as hubristic folly on steroids.

You need to watch more thunderf00t. Mars Settlement by 2024: BUSTED! - YouTube
Computers were developped long before anyone went to the moon.
But they needed nuch smaller, much more efficient ones for the task.
The science that went into the new chips and parts and other things was the groundwork on which a lot of modern tech evolved from.
There were mechanical computers long long ago. The space projects, and other tech where budget wasn’t a big consideration afforded the development of the tech that now costs pennies, is a fraction the power & size, and WAY more powerful.
Blue sky projects are essential to developing bleedin gedge tech.

Yes. But the tech started from the same place. Triumf, just across the straight, has just figured out how to make a medical isotope that was in danger of becoming very scarce as at least one of the reactors aged out.

It is hard to see a day when everyone is doing OK. But worldwide poverty continues to decrease, and we see more studies that suggest that a guaranteed minimum wage is cheaper than just letting people remain poor.
Yes, the government has spent the really big bucks to get the tech off the ground, now it is time for the innovators to take things to the next level.

Terraforming Mars is not at all practical at this time… and you are moving from on egravity well to another.
The real growth is in living and working in space. Huge spinning cyclinders habitated on the inside…

A cube 28x28x28m. Not much. It is very powerful and dangerous stuff and it is a problem.

There are also 460 000 cubic meters of intermediate level radioactive waste, 3.5million cubic meters low level and 2.35million very low level waste plus 370 800 tons of spent fuel.
The low level and very low level is being dealt with but so far there is no solution for the intermediate and high level nuclear waste or the spent fuel.
The sooner we start mining for dilithium crystals the sooner we can think about beaming up all manner of waste. Get the fecal matter out of the orbit... give it a good push to some anti-social alien planet... and we turn a problem into a universal force for good. (Seems that being in a smoke filled car with the ghost of Bob Marley is inspiring)

Makes me think of total recall/moonbase alpha… (or 2001 for the rotating stuff)
But I actually wouldn’t bet on any of them to ever become true, not even close.
There are also 460 000 cubic meters
And how many cubic km of waste being stored from oil production.
Pollution issues from fossil fuels (and plastic) are spread out thinnly thruout the world, the side products from nuclear is extremely concentrated.
Like an airplane crash were we lose many people at once and it is horrific, but way, way more people die 1 or 2 or 3 at a time in car crashes.
One can, and i have seen, someone carefully explain how man would have had the same kind of fears as many now have with nuclear. How many here would like to try to live without fire?
dave

One thing we can say,is that in most cases, we miss significant points of development that have come to define how we live now.
For example: the phone in your pocket — oops sorry, no longer a phone, a pocket computer. And one that rivals the SuperComputers of 30 years ago.

And my typing skills for example. When i was in hgh school i saw no need to learn how to type, “i’m not going to need that skill”.
dave
Yes I am aware of this.
But there are certain laws of physics (which I don’t understand [emoji4]) that won’t go away.
(I wonder, for example, what the waste per computing-capacity-unit (mip?) is today in comparison to back then, or the amount of energy that is used to get stuff out of the atmosphere… etc…

I'm not going to argue that point because you are totally correct, what I am arguing is that there will be a solution for nuclear waste when we've worked on that one for 70 years without any progress.
what's that compression driver, Planet 10 ????😀
We absolutly should live without fire, as fossil material burning is problematic. Unluckilly in too much many countries, people have no choice and still need fire for street and home coocking, heat when it's cold, boiling water that is not sane, etc.😀 Not saying the locals in Australia and some african countries knew to burn to regenerate and controll landscapes, it was already science.
The fact is each human should have an energetic passeport bill and we will see than people are spending ten thousand more energy than others in a nowadays world that is too much limited cause we grow like rabbits in a garden.
>I'm glad some of us can have such conversatio,n we hadn't 20 years ago, things are getting better as consiousness increases.
Human being is a strange beast, yesterday he needed to eat to survive, nowadays, he needs to consume goods and energy not to have nervous breakdown with priests with short vision of what ontology is, are saying it's science and it spreads like a virus. They are mixing things IMHO and are by choice, by job, by school learning, etc, totally ruled by the word "science"... as if the deep nature of human being which one is to search, curiosity I read, was only focused on technical...
Knowledge is far to be just science and if its importance can not be criticized, some really talk about it like a religion... What we should send spaceshift on Mars just because it is univetable... again remind me Chanel 5 perfume ! Common....! In an ideal we could make everything and working to go to Mars not problematic... but look at the world, the race is not towards Mars imho, it's to control what we did in two century before it's too later cause some still consider they are alone and can do all what they want for their own limited interest ! I know you know that , but I just want to confirm it's still kicking 🙂
Class A, yes, if few what instead big class AB that consumes close if 200 W, perhaps. And use it the winter because you sealed the fire place and elec radiators at home !
Nuke is good, why not working on depoluting by sending it in space ? Dangerous ?, More than Covid cause bats soup, or everyday car pollution, etc ... not sure ?
We will not talk of the idiots buying electrical cars loading them with a fossil electricity ! Musk is definitely not my friend yet !
