Cheap surround speakers

I was looking to build some cheap surround speakers, and have been looking at some designs using the tang band TB W3871S but i am not sure yet and don't want to spend $20 cdn for 10 drivers if they are not that great. Another driver i found is in the attached picture, These are almost 2/3s cheaper than the w3871s and i think they would be better because of they have a larger frequency response, but i really don't know. I really don't know that much about driver specs but i am learning, Electronics is really not my specialty. BTW they surrounds would be used along with a tempest sonosub if that helps at all.

If anyone could point me in the right direction as to which driver to go for it would appreciate it. I want to keep these really cheap but also good quality. I don't think either could be worse than what i use now for surrounds.

Thank you in advance for your help

Use the 871S hands down.
The others i have measured them and the 871S is a no brainer.
FS is higher but a smoother sound.
SPL is higher on the 871S 87DB to 81 DB on the clearance drivers.
There is a few clearance if they are left http://www.nuera-acoustic.ca/img/datascans/fa69p805-w.jpg
These are sleepers.
The others you were looking at were designed from TB to use in a large array.
Yes 50 per side in clubs over seas.
I have seen the plastic cabinets and they were slick.
They stack one on top or side by side with a plastic dowel.
And the 81 db is a low spot in them for single driver use.

The other is the 319S1, not the high end extention as the 871S.
Use them and you will be very happy.
The drivers can be bought from CSS as Bob has a ELFF 1.5 that uses 2 of the 871S drivers.
1 as a full range and the other as a low end driver.
The filter can be bought from CSS as well.
CSS has them as kits in a few ways
And if you want complete he has them ready to use as well, all finished.
I have been using the 3" drivers all that TB makes at this point and a few that you will never see(right DAVE) 🙂)))
And there is nothing that comes close to the 871S for the size, cost and out put.

DO NOT LET THE FACT THAT IT IS ONLY 3" FOOL YOU.
Remember big things do come in small packages!!
I would be glad to supply graphs if you want.
I am just getting use to MLSSA so I will have a little info on a site of mine in a few days.

Thanks for your help, I checked out css. thats where i got the idea to use these drivers in the first place. I would rather build my own cabinet though, thats my strong point. I'll go ahead and order the drivers some time within the next week or so, and try and put some pics up (when i can borrow a digi camera).

Well Dave.
MLSSA is proving to be a very big learning tool.
I recieved it with a EarthWorks PREamp and mic.
What a set up.
Still learning the ropes but what a gas.
The 871S will be making a few apperances in a MT,MTM.
In time:bigeyes:

Help finding plans?

Ok, so i've settled on the driver, it's gonna be the 3871, but now i can't find any plans anywhere for a center channel using these drivers.

What i want is to use 2 drivers and a tweeter but i havn't found any site that uses this combination. If a tweeter in unessasary i can drop it from the plans. I really want to keep the cost of these really low. between $50-60 cdn for each, maybe less

I will build the center first, because it is the weakest point in my system right now and will judge by that wether to build surrounds. I don't know enough about any modelling software to venture a design on my own. But i can learn if needed.

is there any websites that have a design using these drivers other than CSS that i have missed in my many google combinations, or is nobody willing to share their creations using these drivers.

why use a tweeter.
Build the ELF 1.5
using twin 871s drivers.
The off axis responce at -30 is only 4 db down at 20k
What else you looking for.
Build 5 or 6 of them and you will be more than happy.
That is for sure.
I have used them in a HT 5.1 system and the Shiva sub nothing wrong there.
And feed with a Yamaha 100 watt reciever in a 20X16 room and the sound stage is very giod for the money.
I will say for that price range nothing will come close.
