Cheap DIY ? Is It possible?

HI 🙂 I am 17 and I am getting a JVC RX-6020VBK for xmas but the only problem is I got no speakers to be drivin 🙁 Is there a place in Canada (perferably the Edmonton Alberta area) were I can get towers and rears for $350 or less? I would like to get a complete kit that you assemble at home because I suck at wood work :s I found the m4s at http://www.theloudspeakerkit.com/ suit my needs but they are in Australia and shipping would kill me 🙁 or could I get a complete 5.1 system for $450 or less. Or should I just go with a $500 system from kenwood or sony? <--- BTW not one of those gay theater in a box kits.

Check out the ELF home theater kit at CSS.

I know what you're thinking. "2 three-inchers?!?", but I heard these at the NW DIY and was pretty inpressed. I don't know if you'd be able to beat the sound for the price. $389 for 5 speakers. If you add a sub, you'll be laughing. They're in Canada(BC) which is a bonus customs-wise. The boxes are all CNC cut so they're pretty easy to put together.

You should contact Bob at CSS for more info.

Another idea would be to just get some front speakers for now and add rears and a center later.

The picture on the link at CSS is a custom box. The kit, with some textured black paint, looks like this:

Edit:
The only other kit seller I know in Canada is www.solen.ca
They do not sell any boxes or pre-cut cabinet flat packs.

I heard Jim Griffin's pair (the one shown in the pictures on that site with the purple sides) at DIY2002, and they are impressive considering the small drivers and the price of the entire package. With a subwoofer, you will find a hard time beating this speaker set for the price.

The sub that I heard them with was the $100 (USD) parts express subwoofer. It is a 10" subwoofer, and includes a 100w amplifier for the price. This combined with those speakers would make a decent 5.1 setup.

It sounds great for a $100 sub and complements the small TB drivers nicely.

I too heard the Elfs & they are quite impressive. If you only have a $350 budget, i'd look at getting a pr of these for fronts & a sub to start out (Bob probably has a kit for that too). A pr of 2nd hand store speakers (i started out using a set of modified Radio Shack unpowered computer speakers that i got for $10) would get you started surround-wise. Set the centre channel to virtual and you have yourself the start of something you can grow into.

I have two on-going projects using drivers related to the W3-871s in the Elfs -- stay tuned -- and one of these days i'd love to get a quad of the 871s and doind a greening of the Elf project.

An externally hosted image should be here but it was not working when we last tested it.

Thanks guys 🙂 the elfs look perfect! I have heard the 2 inch drivers from that company in sats. Size isn't everything. They don't have to do all the bass so they should be just fine. The sub looks cool to 😉 and its a 10" most of the systems in the store use 6.5" or 8". I also found these http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/show...&St3=74143274&DS_ID=3&Product_ID=117804&DID=7 at the parts express site for $180 USD. Anyone used\heard TEAC before? Parts express also has some nice drivers and cabinets 🙂 later tonight I will price out some custom systems. Thanks all 😀 .

DWARF SUB KIT

FYI

I'm working on the DWARF sub kit to go with the ELFs. This is 13 1/2" X 13 1/2" X 12" H and includes 2 6.5" woofers, a 10" PR and a 150 watt amp plus the cabinet kit for under C$300.

There is also the ELF1.0 coming (a single W3-871S) which will also have special pricing for a 5 kit bundle. A third bundle will use 3 ELF1.5s and 2 ELF1.0.

We.re also working on SuperELF which will use a different "woofer" with the 871S "tweeter".

Stay tuned.

Planet 10 you are right. I want something in canuck bucks 🙂 Also what is the differnce between 4 and 8 ohms? I have the basic undestanding of what it means but would like to know more. How do you calculate the rms of a custom built tower? do you add all the rms of the speakers inside. So the elves would be 30 watts rms (15*2=30) right?

ohms is the resistance the speaker has -- the load it presents to the amplifier. 4 is half of 8 and (tries to) draw twice the current from the amp. Amps that can drive low impedance loads tend to have big power transformers... there is a lot more to it than this. in halojoy terms

observe
and absorb...

that is about right... power ratings as they pertain to speakers is a somewhat meaningless pursuit thou.

I don't know if this is right but by looking @ car amps I have come to this conclusion.
200 watts @ 8ohms
400 watts @ 4ohms
800 watts @ 2 ohms
1600 watts @ 1 ohm

so using the same driver just differnt ohms would this be right 100 watt 4 ohm and a 100 watt 8 ohm the 8 ohms would have a higher spl because it is easier to drive? Sorry I am kinda a newbie 😛

In a perfect world, a perfect amp could do this (there aren't any). Home amps rarely have enuff power supply to go much below 4 ohms -- sometimes 6 or 8 ohms.

No. If the drivers have the same efficiency 100 W into either will produce the same SPL. If the amp gets close to doubling it's power into 4 ohms, it would be capable of driving our hypothetical 4 ohm driver 3 dB louder (3 dB is just enuff to notice).

Old topic, I know... but I am kinda confused as well, again. You must be getting tired of me, planet10. 😉

Ok, so if the power doubles on the woofer (4-0hm) then you get a 3dB increase. Well, if you have two woofers and a tweeter in an enclosure, hooked up to a crossover, lets just use a ready made Dayton here. So we have two four ohm woofers linked in series, hooked to the woofer part and an 8-ohm tweeter to the high section. Do I get any increase in the woofer end this way using two woofers? The Dayton xovers are capable of crossing over 4 and 8-ohm woofer sections, so if I used two 8-ohm woofers to make 4-ohms, even though it won't change anything with the xover, will it increase in SPL?

Check in electronics surplus stores for drivers, ive found preety amazing stuff for less than 10$, just because the store had 2k of them, not because the drivers are bad..

i actualy made a pair of 3 ways with 10$ drivers, thats 60$ for drivers, mdf, and evrything else.. costed around 120$ (before aplying any finish)
and its the best pair of speakers i own 🙂..
yhea i prefer em to the JVC`s and philips i have.

they are using a AR 8" driver, a 5" `mid, and a 1" silk tweeter.. and becauyse most of them dont come with any form of parameters, i had to calculate em all

How do these Elf compared to sound clearing house? here

Not having heard the SCH speaker i'm only taking an educated guess.

They probably sound quite different... the Vifa 5" probably gives that speaker a bit more weight in the bottom, and the Peerless T a bit more extension at the top, but the 2nd order XO probably robs it of the midrange coherency that comes from a single full-range.

No-one seems to be attempting a bipole "ELF" to see if moving the 0.5 way speaker to the back helps improve that coherency even more, so i may have to try that myself. I have a little TL design for them for bass-loading.
