I have a pair of Gauss H5831-AM woofers. The tag says: Special Cone Assembly. Does anyone know where I can get the specs for these? I last used them over 20 years ago and have lost the info.
Cetec Gauss H5831-AM
Hi - just joined and saw your post. I have 4 of these and would also like to get the specs.
Trying to recreate the speakers we used to build in the 70's. The H5831-AM was custom built for Audio Mart in Kansas City, MO as an alternative to the Altec 515B. We used them in the Monitor Elite's, mated with Polydax PR17HR70 for mid and ESS Heil Air Motion Transformer for highs. We also did 2-way versions without the mid with the Altec 515B's or 416A's, which crossed at 1000Hz. I have some of the 3-way x-overs but have not checked the cross freq's yet (and don't remember from way back when).

Wow- I'm just seeing this! I gave up on finding details on these old drivers. I had not checked this old post in years-obviously! My drivers are from Audio Mart as well. I had the twin 16 ohm Polydax mids but want to rebuild as a 2 way. I loved the mids, but always felt imaging would be better with a single mid or none. It turns out an Audio Mart service center still exists in KC and they may be able to get me the xover specs. I don't have any test equipment these days so building my own is not an option. If i get any more details i will post them.
Must be something in the air, was thinking about Gauss speakers again today, used them back around 1974 through 1978. Used the 5842, which was re-designated as the 4582 in 1979. Really low Xmax, which would explain the harmonic distortion when driving them with 400 watts below Fc in a horn enclosure..
The H5831-AM specs are probably similar to one of the drivers below, possibly the 3580 or 4583F.

I was told it was close to the 3851 but with a 5” voice coil instead of 3”. I have some of the specs filed away. I’ll post them as soon as I find it.
I picked up my Heils from AudioMart back in the day. I remember getting mail from them stating that they had acquired some warehouse stock and were selling them. Couldn't buy these back then. Price was right so I grabbed a pair. They also had the "Monitor Elite" detailed in a flyer. Those were two way with the Gauss 15" woofer.
Just pulled out the woofers. Looking at this pair I agree that they are not a 5” VC. That story I heard was incorrect. I bought my Gauss 15s, 4 Polydax 6 inch mids, and Heil tweeters from Audio Mart. Heil tweets were indeed rare to find back then. There was a 2 way version available from audio mart at that time. I don’t know if the same woofer was used to mate with the Heil. A friend of mine had his Gauss woofers re-coned with foam surrounds. They produced lower frequencies and from a much smaller box. Anyone else hear of that? I still have all the components so I guess my winter project is decided.
It is possible to recone speakers with non-standard parts to vary the TS parameters, though the Gauss 4.125" voice coils and double spiders are hard to source.
Considering the cost of recone, I'd leave the old drivers "as is".
There are still customers that may pay $$$ for Alnico drivers like Gauss, even though it's not hard to find better current drivers that fit specific desired parameters- especially when it comes to low frequency drivers that work better in small boxes.
