Celestion 2-way PA speakers or Frugel Horns XL for metal/hard rock?

I am really liking this 10f/8424 / RS225-8 WAW "dark espresso” design

They ar equite popular and supposedly quite good. I find the F10 kinda dark, and it is very pricey (drivers i prefer are about half as much)

btw is the "dagger" the woofer deflector you were talking about? never seen that before, what is it for?

@ completely different things. A stealthWoofer/Deflector is a triangular column that sits behind the mouth of a Frugel-Horn and has a woofer in it. Dagger is XRK’s elongated tetrahedrond which is a very effective shape for a sealed mid or midTweeter subenclosure.

what would you use instead in combination with the RS225s ?

Would Pluvia 7.2 HD + RS225 be a good combo maybe?

I see, thank you for the explanation.

This is my current setup. I am using Paul Carmody's speedsters with an ACA amp.
They have a surprising amount of bass, but obviously not enough.

The design space for WAW design has a lot of room for exploration. There are a growing range of quite decent FRs, and midbasses aimed at cone+dome are available in huge numbers.

The Dayton is highly praised, i personally tend to avoid PE’s house brand for their business practises. I do like one of the Madisound house brand woofers (the Silver Flute W14, 2 of which we use in Tysen V2.

As with any multiway a well worked out passive XO is the hardest part, life is much easier if you can bi-amp. Given your goals, you can look to drivers that suit yout needs, the A26 mentioned earier can easily be used as a platform for a WAW. I haven’t finished that drawing. Big bass, something you could probably use, then a midTweeter that plays loud and clean enuff (much easier given that in a WAW the woofer is doing the heavy lifting).

Alpair 5.2/3 would be the “equivalent” of the 10F, i personally think it sounds better than 10F. P7HD is superb, we have used its precursor A7.3 in at least a couple of our bigger WAW.

That dual woofer WAW looks amazing! I would love something like that!

Thank you again for the response, that helps me narrow down my options. I am in the UK so that limits my ability to use the madisound kit due to shipping costs.

My thought process is I am not very experienced in speaker design, and I can only get so far by asking questions here, so I would struggle to design something from scratch / that is a significant deviation from a popular design.

The 10F and Alpair 5.3 or Pluvia 7.2HD or 7 PHD cost about the same in the UK.

I would like to use the Alpair 5.3 in place of the 10F, but I suspect it is not a drop in replacement and would need XO mods that I don't really feel comfortable doing.

So I think that leaves me with 2 options:

1) Just copy the 10F / RS225 WAW design. Simple enough. Added bonus, I would not have to get a 2nd amp and miniDSP.

2) Be more adventurous and use a Pluvia 7.2 HD / RS225 WAW design + miniDSP + replace my amp with 2 amps for biamping.

I like the idea of getting more efficient amps and using a miniDSP to double up as a DAC, but it would be quite a big rework of my setup. I will need to sleep on it.

The Mad cabinet is not really that good. In th eUK talk to Stefan at KJ Audio.

Someones proven design is recommended, if you can bi-amp you will have more choices.

P7PHD is voiced for Japan, and most outside would prefer a different voicing. Both the others have top end missing in 10F. P7Hd will pay louder, but the A5.3 with monoSuspension should be capabkle of greater DDR (ability to reproduce small details). BTW: in UL KJF is also the source for MA drivers.

Perhaps something like this:

+ miniDSP

Incredibly versatile, i am going to get one just to help figure out where and what topology to a passive or Line level analog XO. Having one and 2 amps makes for WAY more choice.

Thank you for sharing so much info with me Dave, I appreciate it.

Funnily enough i am talking to him about options. He's great, he's helped me build the Troels's Seas 3-way MK II in the past.
P7PHD is voiced for Japan
That might be a good things since a lot what i listen to is from japanese artists.

Very interesting!

Okay I will have a think and make a decision.

notporcupine,

You mention that you are using an ACA in your setup. Have you tried another amplifier that has more watts with your speakers?

You can have a look at the "Zingers" design from Wolf_teeth:

Also regarding P10's comment about P7PHD being voice for Japan, I doubt the driver designer had Babymetal in mind... 🙂

xrk971's FAST 2 way design is also a good candidate for metal genres as it crosses the wide-band unit higher and lets the woofer do a lot of the heavy lifting in the "power range".

I have gone through a lot of amps but I have been downsizing recently. Before the ACA I had an M2 clone but I sold it.

For bi-amping I would want something compact and simple ideally. Maybe an smps powered lm4780. A second ACA would be nice but they are not cheap and out of stock for now.

The designer clearly missed a trick then 🙂
