Hi Slow,

I received the kit...it spend a couple of weeks in transit at the local postal service... 😉 It works fine. I connected the cdrom (a standard lite-on one) to the Twistedpear buffolo DAC and it sounds remarkably good...

One thing I mis is a dedicated eject button. I have to use the remote to open the tray because when using the eject button on the cdrom I cannot get the controller to reliably read the new TOC. Is it possible to add an eject button and change the firmware easily?

Did you get pics of the LCD ones? I saw a blue character LCD when I was browsing some displays and kind of liked it haha.... I imagine mine has shipped already? Was kind of curious what the LCD one looked like though.

Hello guys,
I managed to test two more units and these are my findings:

1. SONY DVD-ROM DDU1621
VERY bass heavy. Slightly muted high end, probably because of the bass heavy characteristics. BUT track skipping does not generate/induce unwanted clicks/cracking sound. Long read of TOC around 4 seconds than the 'usual' 2-3 seconds.

2. LITE-ON CD-RW LTR-52246S (52x24x52)
Just a slight bass heavy when compared to my IMATION. Just a muted click sound occasionally when skipping tracks. Imaging not very precise although stereo separation is good. My second best of the lot.

The IMATION CD-RW still tops in my list. 😀

How do you get your signal from the cdrom to your amplifier? Do you use the analogue output or digital through a descent dac?

Hi mischa,
I am using the DIGITAL OUT from the CDROM feeding directly to a DAC, an Audio Alchemy DDE v1.2
I do not use the analogue output at all.

Isn´t it strange then that there is a difference in sound between the drives? I´d say digital is digital, the difference would come from the D/A conversion and the circuits following.

Maybe the construction of the drive (rigid or floppy) does anything to the sound?

That what I initially thought! 😀

After testing several drives... I found that NOT all drives are created equal... The contruction may have some influence, but I think it is more on the electronics side... not all of them are using the same read/laser mechanisms, yes?

Yeah the blue or white in that looks very good. The LCD's you have currently are kind of a mess for the eyes haha.

I've got the last VFD kit he had, believe he said he can't get anymore of the VFD ones yet/anymore. He has the LCD and just said he's going to look into getting the nicer LCD displays.
