This is what I meant:
Th kit consist of several pcb´s:
PCB1: the pcb on the back of the display
PCB2: the pcb consisting of following parts: IR receiver, Button board, CD-rom controller.
Does PCB2 only control the cdrom drive?
Is the display HD44780-based ?
Regards,
Mischa
Hi Mischa
Yes,PBC2 only control the cdrom drive.
The VFD display isn't HD44780-based.But can compatibly with HD44780-based 1602LCD.

Huang
So I control the display with a HD44780 ????
I´m sorry for the annoying questions, but you´re writing in SHEnglish (Short-English) 😀 😀 😀 😀
I still don´t know if it is possible to order an extra display and what it would cost.

Mischa
I already found out. It´s a Noritake CU16025ECPB-W6J. Still the questions remain about the separate display to order and the price for it.

Another question:
Does this kit decrease the speed of the drive? So that the drive does not keeps spinning at high speed for computer use. For audio use the speed can be much lower. Otherwise the drive will make a lot of noise.

Hi Slowgay.
How much would the total be to Melbourne, Australia?
Thanks. 🙂
glt :
What was your experience with the speed of the drives? Did they spin at 1x, or speed up and down, or stay at max speed?
Wouldn't want a noisy player...
cheers,
Mark

Hi Bikeman,
Asked the same question to seller.
Drive spins at single speed and is not noisy, according to the seller
Also depends on what drive you use of course 😉
Maybe ask someone who already has got the kit?

Bikeman:
It depends on the drive. Some are quiet, some are loud, some shake. As I said, the one I liked the most because it was quiet (not sure if it was spinning 1x or faster) did not have digital out, but the chip had the digital out pins, so I had to do some minor surgery. If you have access to a computer graveyard, you can try different drives for free. I think the speed is determined by the drive's firmware.

Good Drive
Today I scavenged a PANASONIC CR-588-B CDROM 24X made for HP (Took it out an old HP computer). This one is a winner: quiet, fast open/close tray and digital out. Made in Japan in 1998.

Huang,
I can now report that I have mated the slim-drive Samsung SN-S082 from post #86 with the kit. Bought a JAE-50 to IDE adpater for $5 at eBay. Had to do some soldering to make the drive a master and also add analog ground to the audio output.
Didn´t work at all first, had to slip the drive into one of my laptops for some initation process. After that it worked perfectly!
And it doesn´t need 12V, only 5V as the kit😎😀!!

Hi Lars
That's a good idea to make a mini CD player with slim-drive~and the power supply more easy~It'll perfect if you add a digital out for it~
