I'm looking at a Roberts a770X RTR for the amp guts. I've heard a pair of monobloc amps can be easily made from the lower section of that RTR.
Help....the local auction ends in an hour. Dennis.

I have read articles/threads on other forums doing exactly that.
A quick check over at AudioKarma got some hits.

For future reference, the Roberts 770X (IIRC) shares "guts" with the Akai M8 and a pair of 6X4 rectified, full pentode mode SE 6BQ5/EL84 monoblocks are inside. Definitely something to work with.
The last person who posted about using an old cathedral radio, and updating it, got a lot of criticism.
An old Roberts or old Akai recorder is not nearly as old as the cathedral radio,
but I bet there are those out there with 7 1/2 inch tapes who want old recorders.
I have a couple of tape recorders, tapes, and not the time or energy now to fix the recorders.
I am more inclined to purchase a used one that works.
We used to have several surplus stores in the area with all kind of parts. We built amplifiers from the surplus.
No such surplus stores here anymore, they all went out of business.

I have 6 of these modules, i will never use them all.
Yes these can be made into any number of EL84 SE amps. There are extra tube/tube sockets that you won’t need. The PS trafo is nice and the layout makes for a tidy build once you have stripped it down.
A schade-style amp (like RH84) would be my 1st choice.
There is also an EF86 mic pre.

If you can get hold of an old Tandberg reel-to-reel, they have a ‘PA’ setting, so you have an amplifier, and a wood-clad tape recorder that has a surprisingly small footprint when placed on its side.
The best one is a 74B, with EL84 SE amp, but any of the other stereo ones with ECL86 sound good. There are also two speakers in the box, or you can switch to externals.
I have one, but it has taken quite some re-capping. It has Rita’s which are prone to splitting.
The eventual goal is to have it tied to a Bluetooth.

I also have two complete Akai M8 machines that I've been hanging on to just for the electronics. The transports are garbage. A single motor deck that's a mechanical monstrosity with functions driven by rubber drive wheels which are positioned by pot metal cams that are known to break. The hold back tension is done with a cheap plastic & felt friction clutch that, over time, will cause flutter as it begins to cog. Yes, there are folks that like older tape machines including myself. But not those Akai's or Roberts.

FWIW, I have some somewhat zany thoughts on repurposing the electronics.
6267 = EF86
12AD7 = 12AX7
1 twin triode section as voltage amplifier feeding a SE full pentode mode final.
1 twin triode section as 1st gain block in a RCA style phono section.
EF86/6267 as 2nd gain block of phono section. A nice tube, but gm is low. Quiet enough?
Switch to SS rectified B+ to free a 6.3 VAC winding up for DC heater PSU feed.
Wire O/P tube socket for Russian 6Π15Π (6p15p) and 0A2 regulate g2 B+.
0A2 in 6AR5 socket. Sockets wired for the 6Π15Π accept EL84s. "Rolling" time?
