Can a pair of full range speakers replace LS50?

between fullrange and 2 way also is the FAST. XRK own design, as mentioned before, is very high bang for buck (i own the drivers, but have yet yet to hear the whole thing togheter). You can replace the ss 10f by tc9fd10-08 to reduce cost considerably. it is bigger though( whole box size) and not very sensitive

And lose a lot in somics as well.

There are a growing number of good WAWs. Take your favotire FR (it doesn’t need to do bass) and ad dhelper woofers. Active is easier, and often cheaper, but passives can be done. at the other end (much bigger, much more expensive, much more capable are something like these.

WAWs are the next step beyond FR when they aren’t quite doing it for you.

Just yesterday I finally took my equipments upstairs and set them up on my bedroom for the first time in 15 years. It is a dead quiet carpeted room with curtains on the front and side walls, room is 9'x10'x8'high.
Little do I know, I never thought my 2 decades old $150cdn per pair Polk audio RTi4 could sound so much better. It was almost in the same league as the LS50 in terms of sound stage and details. After it was hooked up to the Yaqin MC-12S, placing them in a close 5 feet triangle setup, the experience was immersive. What I concluded is that even a pair of cheap speakers can sound good with the right amp in the right condition.

Which is why it's funny to see some people throw thousands of dollars into speakers and components, and place them in a square box full of standing waves kinda room....

Then, they "upgrade" the speakers, cables, amps, etc... trying to get the perfect combination for their room, when a couple hundred dollars of acoustic panels placed in some key areas would improve ten fold the amount they spent on getting speakers and electronics.

Nothing beats a good room... like you mentioned, even some cheaper speakers can sound pretty good in a good room.

Guess I will be defaulting my bedroom as the listening area for now. Just wondering, would a pair of fullrangers in the FH or TABAQ able to shine in a large room like my open design living room which is 15'x27'x9' just like the LS50 did?

As Pidesd mentioned, for FR, the smaller the better. I am thinking the sweet spot for me would be a 4" driver. With my budget constraints at $50 per driver, I have came up with two candidates. The MA Pluvia 7 HD (which is based on the 1st Gen Alpair7) and the TB w4-2142. I see that the 4" counterpart also came out around the same time with the w5-2143 therefore they should share the same technologies. What are the unique characteristics of these two drivers?

I have played my 4" TABAQ in a bigger room than yours.
It wasn't a room shaking experience, of course, bu still, people were impressed with the output.

The w4-2142 Qts is a bit low for a TABAQ. I've haven't tried to simulate it yet.
For a design like the TABAQ, you want to see a driver with specs close to Qts:0.50.

I'm not saying that drivers above or under that wouldn't work, but as a rule of thumb, this is what we are looking for.

So, the Pluvia 7 might be a little better here.
The only thing is that the bezel on the MA drivers is huge and it would be hard to mount them flush to the baffle.

Planet10, those are cool! What drivers? Do you sell the plans?

2 x Alpair 12pWeN + A7.3eN in a Woden specified ML-TL. Response (modeled anechoic) to 25 Hz F10. The A7 can be swapped out for P7HD, A7ms, A6.2. A5.2/3 or your other small favorate small FR. EnABLed drivers are optional. A passive XO for the A7.3 works very well. The speaker was originally designed for biamping with as little as a 1st order PLLXO (ie often cheaper than a passive , especially, if like many of us, more than one amp is available).

The full panset is available. email me.

IMO the A12pw does not get enuff love.

The new baskets, such as the Pluvias, and the new A7/11ms are a more conventional size, tougher, and do not have to be rebated into the baffle.

The 1st gen baskets were overlarge and given bezek thickness did need to be rebated.
